So, I Want To Buy A Dog ... - February 21, 2011, 03:00 PM

... and it's rediculously hard.

I go to all these "adopt a dog" websites and it's harder than if I wanted to get a kid!

I've filled out 3 applications now and they all say, "we can't give you a puppy if you have children living in your house under 5 years old."

That's crazy.

My wife and I are allowed to bring home a new baby when I have another child under 5 years old living in the house, but not a puppy?

Man, "down is becoming up" in America.

They want to visit my house to "inspect" it.

They want permission to come by "any time".

They want me to ensure medical costs to "as much as it takes".

If I ever want to sell the dog, I have to give them first right of refusal.

I have to answer questions about, "have I ever had a dog put to sleep?" (I have. Two of them ... 13 and 17 years old that were hours or days from dying with cancer)

They want to talk to my Vet to ask about my "veterinary practices".

I'm not making this stuff up.

Unbelievable.

I have 3 children. I went to the doctor, spent a day and a half for them to be born and get checked-out, and then came home with a new baby ... THREE times. Never had anything close to this. I don't even think I gave them my "place of work".

What the people above have said or find out when certain agencies are going to be in local pet stores and go then. They don't have you do much but fill out papers and you're on your way out the door.

I rescued mine in November from the local PetsMart.

+2

Just got my last dog from them although he was a full grown (6 year old) coon hound.

He was their longest standing resident at the time so the wife figured that we would take him.

Good organization to deal with.

yeah man, its just their way to help ensure the dog is going to a good home. its to weed out the kids and familys that they think might be a quick returner. If you find an animal that you will love, fill out the paperwork and say bring it on. You wont get a visit.

my parents adopted from the same group, they had the same specheal.. same result.. great dog and no visits.

The PWC shelter usually has a lot of dogs and isn't far from you. Adopted one of my dogs from them and it was a pretty easy process, nor expensive. None of the background checks, visits, etc.

If you are looking for a specific breed (outside of very common breed i.e. retrievers, german shepherds) you may have a more difficult time finding it at a shelter. A lot of breeds have their own rescue groups, but they usually have that process you speak of and will cost almost as much as getting a puppy.

PetHarbor.com: Animal Shelter adopt a pet; dogs, cats, puppies, kittens! Humane Society, SPCA. Lost & Found. Some of the local shelters use this site to post the current dogs they have available for adoption.

Good luck with your search!

If you're looking into pits I recommend Bully Paws Site Down

They were great to work with and they have the same practices you mentioned but after the initial visit they cleared me of everything else.

My dog, Bear, is beyond great and I'm glad I found them.
