Somali pirates take US hostages - Discuss - April 10, 2009, 08:06 PM

We all know whats going on with this I hope ... if not turn off American Idol and get caught up.

What are your thoughts?

Is the USA showing weakness under the new administration?

French commando's killed 2 and captured 3 today ... pretty bad when the French make us look weak.

It's just like raising a child... they wil push you more and more to see just how far they can, and what exactly they can get from you before pushing too far.

I'm sad to say that America, and much of the world, has become spineless. Everyone has to be politically correct, everyone deserves a "piece of the pie" so to speak. Criminals laugh are our Justice systems because our forms of Justice are weak, ineffective, and often times just aides criminals in their dealings. Our leaders seem to believe throwing money at problems will solve them, and of course no one believes anyone should ever be offended.

My point is that as long as the law is weak, the criminals will be strong. Justice systems fail miserably countless times each year, and as we watch more and more piracy plague the oceans nothing but payouts are done about it. Why stop boarding ships and demanding ransoms when companies and countries are willing to pay out? Isn't a pirate nothing more than a terrorist? What happened to "We do not negotiate with Terrorists?" -- oh yeah, I forgot... we have spineless leaders steering the ship.

With your tears and cold hands shaking from the weight
When you lower me down beneath that sky of gray
Let the rain fall down and wash away your pain"

Somali pirates:
We have to find the people behind the pirates! I am sure they are not doing this all on there own! I am sure the shipping companys have a idea how to stop this, but they won't!I happen to like what the French have done! Taking matters into their owns hands!

slow ur roll there chiefs....we finally have a president who thinks before he reacts with blunt force, and acording to all intelligence spokespeople, he IS doing the right things to handle this situation. You don't think he's fully fully informed and has his defense dept ready with multiple plans of action. For all you know, they are probably training rescue tactics in an exact replica of the ship as we speak.

A president doesn't need to communicate to terrorists & their demands...just look back President Carter a few decades ago and see how he played this card...it was a disasterous year and half for him because he put himself out there. He put his face on the situation and kept commenting about it in public. He did all sorts of stupid shit like boycotted leaving the White House. Sounds like something a child would do "i'm mad at you so i'm not coming out of my room!" lol

Sorry Venom, Obama doesn't have a clue when it comes to defense, but that is another thread for another time. Rescue? So they can hijack another ship next week? Big fucking deal. You have take some action that will deter them from doing it again.

It's the shipping companies fault as much as the pirates. There's been what, hundreds of millions in ransoms paid in the last 2 years? Insurance companies aren't helping either. Currently piracy is a viable trade. Until the money dries up, even if it becomes dangerous, it'll still be a problem.

Or at least that's my 2 cents anyway.

Um, the "ship" is only designed to hold 12-15 people and is not much bigger than a UPS truck:

The real ship is back in port.
I actually like what the Frenchies did. Much like the Israeli's did with that hijacked plane back in the day. Instead of paying ransom money, the insurance companies should pay mercinaries to hunt and kill the pirates BEFORE they take a boat. Or, after they take it, hunt them and their families down and kill them along with their livestock and neighbors. Hunt and kill. Simple. Then I wouldn't mind insurance rates so much.

Couple things:

Nova Ghost - Its not longer a "global war on terror" the new administration has now defined it as a "overseas contingency operation".

Nasty - Hollywood would love to come up with their version of Blackhawk Down II and make money while dishonoring the dead soldier. Maybe we can talk them to death instead.

Cookie - Currently shipping companies dont allow the crew to carry weapons because it raises their insurance. And of course that insurance cost is passed on to the customer. So why would someone pay more when they can go with unarmed cargo ships that are much cheaper both to the owner and the customer.

While I don't necessarily agree with hunting people down (families, etc), I do feel that in situations such as the current piracy rush, there comes a time when sacrificing a few to save many should be a considered option.
