Space Shuttle Discovery coming to Dulles - April 3, 2012, 03:45 PM

Right now it is scheduled for April 17. If it is raining it will be rescheduled. The tiles absorb water and all the extra weight would be bad. Before landing, the 747 and shuttle will be flying around the DC area to show it off, and probably for getting some press photos of it passing the monuments.

I'm planning to be along the approach to Dulles to get some pics and video. I'm hoping it will be landing on 19L in which case I will be in the Ashburn area.

How insensitive can the government be! With the terrorist attacks, how could they even think of flying two planes humping around DC! I wounder how many people will call 911 to report a terrorist plane fly around.

Does Dulles already have one of the shuttles?

Nice. I will see if I can borrow a camera and be near one of the monuments to get some good photos.

My office is right across 28 from the approach end of 19L. Would be awesome if they use that runway.

Everyone should get photos of the parade of possibly the biggest boondoggle in our federal government's entire history.

I know what a boondoggle is.
But the space program and the shuttles were boondoggles to you?

Shuttle program was not just a boondoggle to me but to us all. The wiki article even mentions the space shuttle program specifically. That's telling in of itself.

There is a history behind all this. There was concern that the Soviets could get our space craft after reentry so that's why the thing has wings and landing gear, so that it could fly out of Soviet area. All this and other things came at a tremendous cost. It's cheaper to shoot people into space the way everyone else in the world does it. The day the shuttle program was retired was a great day, although the money will probably be spent on other frivolous nonsense rather than trimmed from the taxpayer liability.

$196 billion over 30 years, adjusted for inflation? There have been worse budgets.
