The "Spot Doctors" were right - January 31, 2007, 07:36 PM

Ok, as you may know, I hurt my wrist the beginning of the month. Tried to ride... you know the rest.. Anyway I go to the ER, they put me in a splint I go to the Ortho Doctor, she puts me in a half cast, tells me to keep it on 6 to 8 weeks, I have a pull or slightly torn tendon. For those who saw the bone thing sticking out of my wrist, you guys know I was questioning that one. Anyway, I kept the cast on for about a week, it hurt where the bone thing was sticking out, so I took it off, and needless to say, I have not put it back on..

Now for the point of my story, I go to another doctor today, recommended by the doctor I work for, come to find out, I do not have a tendon issue, I did not break my wrist (like the ER doctor said) I had a cyst on my wrist, (the bone thingy) minor little procedure, and it is gone. No cast, no rehab..
Ya'll should see my medical bills from the ER, the Xrays, the special cast they had to make me, and none of it was even needed!
Ok enough venting!

Damn that sucks ass. I think that most doctors go into the back room and throw darts at a board and whatever they hit is what they say is wrong.

that sucks and what a pain in the ass to go through!

but....

the other side.. my dad was an ER doc and the amount of patients and cases he saw everyday he couldn't possibly know everything about every ailment, and they have routine checks like x-rays etc to make sure they don't get sued for not doing everything they can, then refer u to someone who should know what they're doing...... which is why they have specialists... i think it sucks that you had to pay all that tho.. i dunno i guess i have a bit of a soft spot for docs ER ones in particular....

anyways like a car.. always get a second opinion, def from a specialist..

so glad it wasn't anything serious tho!

may the force be with you

I would honestly rather have the cyst and the doctor bills anyday than a torn tendon or broken bone. The cyst like you said can be quickly taken care of, a broken or torn anything can take years to get back to normal depending on how severe it is. I have had partially torn tendons and torn ligaments and it sucks. Takes forever to heal and the injured joint is never the same after. A chronic knee problem that eventually lead to knee surgery made me stop all sports and riding for about 3 years so it could completely heal and it sucked. The last problem was a partially torn tendon in my ankle at the end of 2003 and it still doesn't feel 100% healed. But I feel you on the misdiagnosis thing but at least it seems like it worked out better for you in the end physically, maybe not finacially though. Just hope your insurance covers most of those bills, shit costs too much $$$$$.

Damn, what an adventure.
Thats great news that it at least wasn't broken, but the pain you were in at the Spot was justifiable to get to the ER. Again, prop's to Warren for at least help getting you there in the first place (and of course Ben for getting your bike home). Time to celebrate!! You don't have to sweat healing, physical therapy or any of that stuff. Take care.

a little sore from yesterday, but other than that I am good, I am not mad at the ER doctor, trust me I was hurting that night, I think the specialist I saw just did not pay much attention to the issue, (bump on arm. put her in a cast) my insurance should take care of most of it after I pay the deductible, (lets hope.. in the doctor's note the Orho doctor said I fell off my bike, not that I was rollerskating..that is another issue)
and yes I am glad it was only a cyst.. I was just venting about the other issues...

Glad to hear that you're feeling better. I'm sure that it's better knowing you will not have to go through physical therapy or possible major surgery and enjoy the 07 riding season.

Ugh, damn Ortho Surgeon. The two times I have gone they were absolutely worthless. When I went the other week for my after er specialist visit, I damn near beat him with my good arm.

I show up and hand the assistant my x-rays, he puts me in a room and tells me to take my sling and shirt off. I sit there for a couple minutes and then the doc arrives. He throws a couple x-rays up on the board and no lie this is the conversation.

Doc - "Well as you can see from the x-rays here Mr. Leech, you have a broken collar bone."

Me - "Uh yeah doc, kinda already knew that."

Doc - "Oh. . . . well the good news is that it is a mostly clean break in the middle, so we won't have to do surgery."

Me - "Yup, knew that already too."

Doc - "Ah. . . well typically all we can do for this sort of break is put you in a sling, the bones will find eachother eventually and heal on their own, I will go ahead and write you a script for the sling."

Me - *holds up my sling*

Doc - "Ok, well in that case, let's get you back in here in three weeks and we will shoot some new x-rays and check your progress, have a good day, just see the girl at the front desk to schedule it and make your payment."

I know what I want to be if I ever grow up, Orthopedic Surgeon, totally worthless job in my experience.

A few stories:

1. My brother nearly lost his hand to a staph infection after surgery on a broken wrist. Had pin put in and a cast put on. Complained to the docs about abnormal pains...they bumped him up from vics to percs. Still had severe pain so they bumped him up from percs to oxys. About a week later his fingers were basically black (and severly swollen). they decided at this point it was time to take the cast off and see what was what. As they were trying to pull the cast over his swollen hand all the pressure shot infection out from between the stitches like a geyser. He spent about next two weeks in the hospital while they tried to stem the infecation. They opened him up 4 times in 7 days. They could not get the infection under control and it was getting critical. The docs told us flat out that amputation was a very real possibility at that point. Luckily they were able to save his hand, but for next few months he had a stint tapped into a main vein that was connected to a little monitor that he carried around in a fanny-pack along with some saline. Every few hours the montior would release antibiotics through the stint and into the vein, which ran directly to his heart, and throughout his body.

2. I broke my wrist when I was 18 on vacation in PA. I got it set up there and a week and half later went to see an orthopedist here in Fairfax. Basically found out that the bones were setting wrong. The doc cut my cast off right then and there, took my wrist in his hands...and basically re-seperated the bones. If that wasnt bad enough, he took two more shots at me while he set them properly.

3. Got in a boating accident a few summers ago (basically hit a channel marker head-on coming back to Occoquan from the waterfront, drunk as hell, on a boat with no lights). My head hit a galley door (knocked it off its hinges and cracked it clear throug to the other side). We all made it home with various injuries and the next day I realized I had a concussion. I could not stay awake or focus on anything so I went to the hospital. I was still filling out all the paperwork and the girl asks me if I wanted to pay my co-pay then or if I wanted her to bill me. Didnt realize that my insurance had changed and asked her how much my co-pay was. She said $100, I said I was leaving. She looked at me like I was crazy and I told her that I wasnt going to pay her $100 to tell me I bumped my head real hard.

Oh yeah, glad everything worked out princess!
