Steubenville Rape Whistleblower: Hero or Criminal Hacker? - August 16, 2013, 08:59 AM

Hacker Who Exposed Steubenville Rape Case Could Spend More Time Behind Bars Than The Rapists | ThinkProgress

We Stand With Deric Lostutter: Support the Steubenville Whistleblower Now!

What do you think? Should Anonymous hackers be able to justify the means with the right ends? Should laws against hacking be variably enforced, depending on the nature of the hacking?

Maybe (hopefully) there will be a compromise deal accounting for the circumstances. Like the guy who used an unregistered handgun to shoot one of several dogs attacking a kid in DC a while back. He paid a fine for the unregistered guns but ultimately had charges dropped.

Don't want "hackers" using justice and safety as an excuse to break the law (only the government can do that). But in this case the ends does justify the means.

If we begin taking an "ends justifies the means" approach to justification and our legal system, then what would be the need for laws at all?

Tenuous and slippery slope.

That said, the act of breaking of the law, its reasons, and its resultant effect should be considered during the sentencing phase. That is the true and proper time to judge and administer the effective punishment for the act - whether that punishment be a fine, a suspended sentence or laying the full penalty under law.

As a sidenote: For this reason I approve the abolishment of Mandatory Minimums. It ties the hands of judges and juries giving them no latitude to make contextual decision and levy rational measures of punishment or corrective action.

“Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. Hence a Prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires”.

- Nicolo Machiavelli 1469-1527

that entire town was going to cover the whole thing up and swept it under the rug, and if it was not for the hacker then none of it would ever see the day's light.

sometimes the end justifies the means.

The whole mess reminds me so much of this.

You really like gorillas?
We've got just the pet for you
It's the way you're forced to act
To survive our schools

Make your whole life revolve around sports
Walk tough-don't act too smart
Be a mean machine
Then we'll let you get ahead

Jock-O-Rama-Save my soul
We're under the thumb of the Beef Patrol
The future of America is in their hands
Watch it roll over Niagara Falls
Pep rally in the holy temple
And you're forced to go
Masturbate en masse
With the favored religious cult
Cheerleaders yell-"Ra Ra Team"
From the locker room parades the prime beef
When archaeologists dig this up
They'll either laugh or cry

Jock-O-Rama-On the brain
Redneck-a-thon drivin' me insane
The future of America is in their hands
Watch it roll over Niagara Falls
Unzip that old time religion
On the almighty football field
Beerbellies of all ages
Come to watch the gladiators bleed
"Now boys, this game ain't played for fun
You're going out there to win
How d'ya win?
Get out there
And snap the other guy's knee!"

Beat 'em up! Beat 'em up!
Ra Ra Ra
Snap those spinal cords
Ha Ha Ha

The star quarterback lies injured
Unconscious on the football field
Looks like his neck's been broken
Seems to happen somewhere every year

His mom and dad clutch themselves and cry
Their favorite son will never walk again
Coach says, "That boy gave a hundred percent
What spirit
What a man"

But who cares?
Games over-Let's go get wasted man
To the 7-11, to the liquor store
Let's party all night and party some more

Another Trans-Am
Wrapped itself around a telephone pole
"I ain't drunk, officer
I just fell gettin' out of my car"

Don't worry about it, son
We were that way when we were young
You've got all the skills
To make a damn good businessman

Jock-O-Rama-that's the law
Come lick the butts of the Beef Patrol
If the future of America is handed to them
Watch it roll over Niagara Falls

Yes, he broke the law but that's what 'mitigating circumstances' are for. If this guy gets convicted then any sentence beyond minimal probation should be cause demonstrations in the streets.

Fuck it, throw him in jail for the rest of his life. We as a country will forget that one man did the right thing exposing rapists and ignore the real victim in worry of our own web searches, sadly this is not a joke, in 6 months this thread probably wont even be found by search.
