Stuck between operating systems, what do I do? - September 13, 2006, 05:48 PM

After getting my laptop I decided I would upgrade my desktop's OS from Windows '98 SE to Window XP since that's what came with my desktop.

For whatever reason it didn't completely install and now it's where these pictures show.

The first step is here:

If I hit 'Enter' I get this:

If I hit 'R' I get:

What should choose and then what after that?

you can't upgrade 98 to XP. You can only wipe and install XP from a 98 machine.

I've read there are upgrade kits availible somewhere, but have no experience with them.

I can't have two OSs on it and just use XP?

is there any good reason why you would want to keep 98 on there? nearly every program that you have on 98 will work on XP.

Sometimes you just have to let go man....I know, its hard, but we're here to support you

I have no need to keep '98. I figured I could just install XP and that would be that.

Whatever is the easiest way to make XP work is what I want to do.

do you already have all of your personal stuff backed up? like photos and documents? and all of your software available on CDs? The best method is to completely wipe the drive and start totally fresh. Less chance of corruption

Everything has already been transfered to my laptop.

How do I got about wiping the drive then loading everything?

just keep going through the installation and it should give you the option of reformatting once you select the C: partition to use

Never heard this. I did it with all 4 of my desktops running 98.

Travis,
You could also use a number of programs out there to run a number of OSs. I use VMware to run XP, 2000, DOS, and Linux all on one machine. I have one machine I have XP with Linux running in a window. I can give you a copy of it. If you want me to set it up for you I would be happy to return the favor for all the motorcycle help you have given.

I just need XP. If you can do that, that would be great. I'm not seeing any options to begin reformatting. It won't start in Windows '98 because of several missing files like win.com. I know nothing about working from the command prompt.

So whenever you're available let me know. Thanks.

Give me a call and I can come by and fix it at your place (you could watch and learn in case this comes up again) or just give it to me and I will do it this week. Could probably do it tomorrow.

Travis, on the second screen, just hit enter and install XP and accept the default path if you want to retain your old info. Otherwise, hit "D" and then "L" to confirm and create a new partition on that space and use NTFS.

If you want the easiest way, just hit "enter" when you get to the second screen and accept the defaults. Just keep in mind that you may need to update your sound/video...etc...etc...drivers as well.

PM me if you have any other questions and I'll help you.
