AT&T launches FamilyMap service, lets you spy on anyone, anywhere - April 15, 2009, 10:35 AM

So check this: AT&T just launched a service called FamilyMap. It basically let’s you locate any number on your AT&T account for a monthly fee. Here’s the thing though… besides the first notification text message alerting that subscriber they are being tracked, everything else is completely silent. For instance, we signed up and were able to track both an iPhone 3G and a Bold completely without any visible indication. No text message, nothing. What’s even more strange, however, is that this isn’t just using cell tower triangulation, it actually can activate the GPS chip. How messed up is that? Something is wrong with this picture… But hey, for only $9.99/month for two phones or $14.95 for five phones, you can have the pleasure of being as freaked out as we are.

When I become an evil overlord, the first thing I'm going to do is place my cell phone into a waterproof bag and set it afloat in a raft down the Colorado river so that they think I'm having a nice time doing some whitewater rafting instead of taking over the world.

I found it most interesting that BGR could track the phone and the user didnt get the txt message.

Major big brother...

Now this would be $$ if your iphone got stolen though.

AT&T has had something like this since 2002 it was internal mostly but it's been in place. Other carriers (all carriers) have the ability to track a phone that is GPS enabled if they have the Telenav track feature and with that one all it takes is a turn on switch and nothing else so no text warnings, this is mostly used on corporate fleet accounts.

As another use, not a bad idea to get a pre-paid and leave it hidden in your car if you are super paranoid about having it stolen...
