Tattoo Help. - February 14, 2017, 06:35 PM

So I am looking at getting my first ink and need some advice. One is who to use and what to look for? Someone around Sterling, Leesburg area would be great. It will be an industrial design for my trade.

Depends are what your going for. Line work? Color work? Each artist will specialize in a area. You just missed the DC tattoo convention in Crystal City
Tattoo Artists DC Tattoo Expo |Exposed Temptations Baller Inc | Crystal City Marriott

That's the artist list, look at each ones work, and pick the one that does work like your asking or close to it then Make an appointment I wouldn't limit myself to and area.

Yeah I am old enough to know better. Thing is, I just don't care.

Naw been a long time coming. Been a Machinist now for 21 years. Very proud of my craft and want to show it. It will offset the volvo I drive everyday.

Now if you see me with a chain for my wallet and keys please punch me!

The Body Gallery 2 in Leesburg; ask for Misty Kilgore. By far the best tattoo artist I've dealt with.

How far are you willing to travel and how much are you willing to spend? Remember, this is going to be on you forever. You get what you pay for. My wife went to NY and PA for hers and I am flying out to CO for mine in august. Took me 22 years to find the right artist for me. Check out Davidian Tattoo Studio in PA. Karly Cleary did one of my wifes. She is an easy three hour drive from Winchester. Megan Massacure in NY did her back piece if you are willing to make that trip. She has her own shop called grit n glory. https://www.gritnglory.com/ There are some awesome new school artist in Richmond Loose Screw Tattoo – Richmond, Virginia | Tattoo Studio and then a ton of great artist at black lotus tattoo in Hanover MD.

Picking the right guy is really tough, Luckily I've found a guy i'm sticking with, but he travels the world so you have to catch him when you can. There's some really good artist up north, I haven't seen any one's work around here i'm impressed with.

This. If you looking for average or aren't a nitpicker about quality then finding an artist is easy. However, if you are very particular and looking for something very specific then it will take a while to find somebody who you think will do what you want well.

Also, yeah there aren't many "great" TAs in the DMV area in my opinion. There are a few, but for the most part there is a lot to be desired.

I just found a guy out of Damascus who looks like he does really good work. Once you starting finding some of these guys that are really good it's hard to like any thing else. I'm prob gonna have 10k in my sleeve but it's worth it I think.

Find someone that does what you want. Not "can do it" but does it. Look through their portfolio and they should have work similar to what you want. Line work needs to be straight lines and smooth curves. Color/shading gradients should be smooth transitions and not patchy. Depending on what you want and how big it'll also determine what they're able to do. Usually it requires a discussion with the artist to see if your idea will work as a tattoo and in the area you want it in. Theres plenty of artists around here. Not plenty of good artists. Dont be afraid to drive to get work done. I go to London for most of my stuff. Just like with tools: buy it right the first time.
