Tattoos & Giving Blood - August 11, 2009, 08:55 AM

I had always heard you had to wait a year to give blood after getting a tattoo. Last fall I gave blood just before getting a tattoo. Inova called a few months later trying to set up a donation. I said sorry, you'll have to wait a year. They said it's now a week. I gave blood in DC yesterday, through the Red Cross. I filled out the questionaire pointed out that I said yes to a tattoo w/i the past year. They asked where I got it? I said VA, in a regulated parlor, new needle, ect. They said I was good. If I got it in DC, I'd have to wait a year to donate. Not sure what that says about DC parlors. I found it interesting though.

Never heard about this, just had a tattoo started yesterday, 3 hour session, another 3 hour session scheduled in 2 weeks

Either way, I lived in Europe when that whole mad cow disease was big, so i haven't been able to give blood for as long as I can remember

DC is the aids/std capital of the world or US...something like 1 in 4. They make you wait long cuz it takes longer than a week for aids/std to kick in.

ahhhh haaa. you are mislead my friends. the needles are in fact not new! the are only processed in a sterilizing machine and then wrapped in a sterile wrap then sealed. i know this because i have a friend that has a tattoo studio and i will continue getting my tats knowing this.

I knew it was one or the other hahaha, either way its safe as long as they are taken out of the sterile wrap after having been processed

The way I see it just make sure your artist is certified by the state of VA to do tattoo work, just look around their studio, it should be displayed for the "public" to see

I'm going to give platelets tonight so I'll ask why it's a week wait in VA and a year for DC.

can you also ask why they are still scared of the mad cow thing? I've been in the states for 10 years and haven't gone crazy (related to cows)

I lived in Turkey between certain time periods and hence have been banned from giving blood. Also visiting Africa was one I think and thats a double whammy for me

Ok i asked on Tuesday when I gave platelets and they said there's no wait after you get a tattoo as long as you went to a certified (or terminology like that) tottoo shop and it's single needle or something like that. She said most shops are anyway. Said the FDA just passed all of this new guidance recently and that INOVA blood follows the newest FDA rules....but she couldnt speak for other places.

So that's the scoop!

Oh and on Tuesday, I got a free t-shirt and coupon for a medium Papa John's pizza. Usually I get nothing and like it!
