Ticket in Essex County, VA - September 14, 2009, 09:04 AM

Wondering if anyone's ever gotten a ticket in Essex County, VA. I'm debating if it is worth appearing in court or just paying the fine. State Trooper told me the judge is pretty lenient and if I take a Driver Improvement course (not online - meaning 8 hours in a classroom) I could get the speeding charge removed.

Thoughts?

Personally, as much as I would like to waste my day at some 'class' and subsequently in court, I didn't think it was financially worth it unless you're out of work and your days are free. (or your record is so horrible you're on the brink of bad things)

Take the class and keep your record clean. The class is plus 5 points and the ticket is minus 4. That's what I would do. As for the ticket, I am not so sure. You may be able to get it reduced if you do go. If it were me, I would just pay it.

So prepay it and take the class anyway?

If it were me, yes. You have a clean record so it is worth a shot if you have the time to go haggle with the court.

It's worth whatever you can do, within reason of course, to keep your record clean. A class and a visit to court is not too much trouble.

You can't have more than plus 5 points so don't take the class before court. Tell them that you are going to take the class. If you take it before court then you won’t get the benefit of the plus 5 points if you do get found guilty of the original charge and the points go on your record after you take the class.

Lizzie, I have some experience with out of the way backwards ass counties and tickets. The Trooper told you in a sentence your recipe for success. Take the defensive driving course and then go to court. The Judge will, most likely, drop it to defective and then a small fine. Exact same thing happened to an ex and she was told the same thing roadside. Did what she was told and it worked out. Then, the same ex and I got reckless tickets in Halifax Co on the way to VIR. Same thing, Defensive Driving and they were dropped. We're talking reckless, not just speeding. It may be worth it to do what the Trooper says. Just my .02
