Time to get all sentimental... - February 24, 2011, 08:52 AM

Well it's been a couple of months since I found this forum, and I just want to express how great it has been to have found it...

A little background first:

in 2001 I was doing an internship for College. Long boring days that led me finding motocorse.com , an online motorcycle community that captured me with my first experience with a forum. I met so many great people there... Had my first track day experience with a group of them, and started becoming one of the "family". in 2002 I finished college and I actually got to work for that site, as a motorcycle tester and track day organizer, I was 22 and I was getting paid (not that much actually ) to ride brand new bikes in tracks like Misano, Mugello and Monza.

The community grew to become one of the biggest ones in Europe with 25.000 active users, 5 million page views per month and a forum that looked more and more like a chat because of the speed of replies. We would have user organised dinners in central italy that would see 400 people show up from all over Italy, with famous pilots as unpaid guests (they where on the forum too!) and many many fun trips all over the place with anything from 5 to 80 bikes riding together. There was one post called "Naked women" (how unexpected, lol) that at one point was said to be the biggest thread in the world with over a million replies. For almost a year I was the sole moderator of all that!

This lasted a couple of years, it all started costing a lot of money to run and the management failed to transform all that traffic into money. Then it all went down, the server was stolen (!!!), that led to the loss of most of the old posts, which really pissed off the users.

Then to "contain" the traffic, came the worst decision: they decided that to get access to 90% of the forum's sub forums you had to pay the "Gold Member"... This was when everyone felt that the internet should be free and 90% of the traffic (and users) disappeared... Since then that place has never been the same. That initial group of people/friends shattered in a number of different forums (by then there had been other options popping up) and there will probably never be such a big group of people again.

.net feels a lot like the early motocorse.com, and I am looking forward to meet people in real life, and I am just happy to have found it

Since this is hosted in the cloud, no one can steal the server.

Plus I redundant backup to two off-site servers.

So don't worry about your posts disappearing.

That's good to know, I remember calling our tech guy saying: why is the site down? His answer was something like: "apparently the guy running the server farm shut everything down and stole all the machines, I am trying to track him down". We found him (not sure how) and me and my boss drove like 5 hours to go get it!

Somehow I have this vivid imaginary picture in my mind of a bunch of servers disguised as sheep sitting in a room with fake grass, and a dude running in, picking them up and jumping over the little white fence with a sheep looking server under his arm. That's how a server farm looks like. I just know it. LOL

You still haven't posted pictures of the elusive American chick who snuck you into this country and is now allowing you to hide in her closet.
