Tips on Care Packages for Troops Overseas - November 7, 2013, 12:50 PM

I know there are a lot of military folks on here so I am hoping you guys can provide some good input. I have two friends over in AFG now and a group of friends here want to send them some stuff. I can't find "official" word on what we cannot send, but I have a general idea. (No skin, alcohol, prescriptions, etc...) Is there some webpage that gives a full list of no-no's?

We are sending stuff for them and for their buddies at the FOB's they are stationed at.

On our list of possibilities:
-Protein powder
-Sunflower Seeds
-Starbucks coffee beans (ground)
-Clothes (is sending civ clothes useful... can they be worn while not on a mission or anything?)
-Heated insoles for boots (It gets cold there too I learned!)
-Good shaving cream
-Christmas lights

We wanted to send chew, but I am getting mixed results on if we can or not.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

You are fine sending chew. It might get ratfucked before it gets to him if he's somewhere remote, but it's allowed. We lost a $500 order of dip one time. That was unfortunate.

Civ clothes are pretty much useless. You have to be in uniform (almost always the case) 100% of the time. PT gear or BDUs.

Get some gun mags, lifting mags, cookies, deoderant. People eat better than expected over there (when at a chow hall). Old Bay, REAL ranch (hated theirs), Sriracha ect... The "good stuff". That'll make their day.

Get a listerine bottle and dump it. Dye their fav vodka blue and send them some spirits this Christmas. This risky gift depends on your recipients interest in drinking of course.

Spices, sauces, cookies, candy bars. Can't go wrong.

I avoided the alcohol bit. Well cleaned shampoo bottles filled with whiskey was a big deal when someone got some.

And we ate like absolute ass, but that was due to our location. Most of the bases have pretty decent chow halls. Girl Scout cookies though, are like crack cocaine.

Thanks all! Didn't even think about spices, but will surely add that. FOB Shank is one of the spots and I am not sure about the other just yet. (He is heading there now...)

I was thinking of sending in some pmags because the old ass mags he was issued look like they have seen better days. Glad to hear that kind of stuff is acceptable.

Another option, and it spares them from lame leaders who don't like personal gear, is some magpul self-levelling followers and some aftermarket mag springs for their issued mag bodies. I brought a bunch of these with me and love them. Cheap too

Baby wipes. Great for cleaning face, hands, neck, etc. Also, it's the King of TP - absolutely a must for avoiding swamp butt after crapping right before going out on patrol and sweating in a humvee seat. I have no firsthand experience here, just passing along what I've been told by buddies.

Shank is the largest base in that area. Generic shit they can probably get since its a big place so I would stick to the sauces or home made foods, something they cant buy in a corner store. Dont put fragrance items in the same bag as food. Sometimes people put small soaps or shampoo in a zip lock bag with food and that doesn't work. Keep food in entirely separate zip locks.

Homemade or Girl Scout cookies are fucking awesome.

New mags are always a good thing.

Rooster sauce is liquid gold, or depending on your friend's tastes, some REALLY hot shit, like Satan's Blood. Even if they don't like it, they'll definitely play some fun [stupid] games with it.
