Tore bicep muscle (MC safety tip) - April 8, 2017, 05:16 PM

OK last Saturday I unexpectedly tore one of my bicep muscles- I'll find out this coming Monday at a follow-up Dr. visit how bad it is. I had a scan done on Thursday. I was replacing a 525 chain on a high-miles bike, and since I was discarding (steel recycling) the old chain, I didn't bother grinding down a pin and pressing it out- I just grabbed the bolt cutters (as I have in the past), to cut it off. As I was bearing down with considerable force, I felt and hear a pop, then enormous pain. Damn. It''s been a week and I want the use of my arm back!
I go to a doctor once a decade, if then. Never had a muscle problem before... I I wasn't strong enough for a task, the strength would give out before the body. 'Guess I'm mortal after all.

yeah.. I'm 35 and get up from chairs all stiff and limping. All the time, not just after sex. Constantly injured it seems. If I make it to 50 I am going to be destroyed.

When it happened (Sat, 3/31) it hurt so much I was dizzy. Now it hurts a bit, but significantly so if I accidentally engage the muscle swiftly. They offered me painkillers but I turned them down. I should have gone to the hospital, but went to a Dr. on Tuesday, eventually had a shoulder/arm MRI. It showed tendinopathy of the infraspinatus without a tear, and it's the pec that has the damage. I was going to have a chest MRI yesterday but my insurance (Cigna) balked at a second MRI... so by the time they approved it I got bumped to tomorrow. I will see a surgeon to go over the results on Tuesday the 18th). He's a sports medicine guy so that's encouraging. The wheels of medicine are slow- 18 days and no treatment yet. I miss regular weight lifting. I'm still riding motorcycles every day though, I may have to quit for a while once they do whatever stitching up they need to do.

With muscle tears, at least major ones, you did the right thing by not going straight to an emergency room. They'll rape you in there in terms of price and often they want to take you straight in for surgery for something that may or may not need it. Worse part is, you don't know who your surgeon might be if they decide to do surgery.

You usually have a good amount of time in terms of the damage before seeing a surgeon when it comes to major tears. First step is to identify the issue with a good doctor and get an initial opinion after they see the MRIs etc. Then it's time to find a good surgeon and get a second opinion. Then weigh your options. If you do need surgery, the surgeon is key! If you have to wait a couple of weeks, it's worth it. Then it's time for PT...

Meanwhile anti-inflammatories are your friend. You don't want to over do them since some inflammation is good. Usually 800mg of ibuprofen every 4-6 hours is ok with some food (I'm not a doctor so do this at your own risk). Good luck.
