Trance music on an acoustic guitar - March 14, 2011, 07:09 PM

I didn't search, so forgive me if this is a repost. A friend posted this guy on FB tonight.

Fvcking kickass trance music on an acoustic guitar. Impressive, to say the least.

And he's going to be playing @ Jammin Java in Vienna on May 28th. We have races that weekend, but I just might have to bail on races to check this guy out. His name is Ewan Dobson.

Apparently he's on iTunes, too, so you can probably check more of his stuff out. I haven't looked yet.

This guy is using some really well timed echo with a slapback effect to get the sounds he's getting. If you watch his hands, you see that he's not playing most of those notes, but allowing the echo of previous notes to layer over top of the played notes, creating the neat sound.

Very cool use of effects. Similar to Michael Anthony's bass solo from the Live album

Also sounds like he has a foot stop loop processor running in there. That way when he bars his step up chords he can keep the bass line running.

All in all that is some pretty interesting stuff. I'd like to see where he goes with the fuzz turned on and a little waa waa thrown in for good measure!!

God Speed Jeff! You'll never be forgotten.

I think it's pretty cool....obviously it doesn't have the same effect of electronic Trance...but for an acoustic guitar it's pretty damn good....

my only question is how "transferrable" is this for someone to play who is already a guitar god? It would be just as interesting to see a primarily rock guitarist to have a go.

What do you value more? Life or Image?

Only listened to it once, but I don't think there's a loop station. It's all his technique. His thumb is still hitting the bass strings, but the left hand is muting them while voicing the higher strings.

If someone is a guitar god in the sense of shredding solos and two-handed tapping, etc. it's probably not instantly transferable. Someone with a classical guitar or other fingerstyle background could probably pick (no pun) it up easier.

^hmm...good point...I can definitely see the classical guitar technique being an advantage to this...
