Traveling to Thailand this April - March 7, 2012, 02:23 PM

My girlfriend and I have booked our tickets to Bangkok, Thailand for the first week of April and will be there for the entire month. Have any of you been to Thailand? If so what was your experience like?

I've picked up a few travel books about Thailand and looking forward to going to a lot of the temples and experiencing the food and culture over there. I'm also interested in signing up for a 3-4 day offroad/onroad motorcycle tours (Quite a few companies and tours to choose from)

Also plan on doing the usual tourist attractions: Snake farms, nightclubs, beaches, Elephant rides, and getting a massage each day

Would love to go scuba diving their too but I'm not certified.

Look forward to your suggestions and comments.

My wife is from Thailand and I have been a ton of times. Are you only planning on staying in BKK? Or are you heading south? Do you know what Hotel you are staying in? We can probably help you with suggestions and she knows people with the hook up on tours and such there. PM me and I can get you some info.

My GF was born in Bangkok and we will be staying with family and friends for the first 4 days. We are then going to head up North to Chang Mai and later head down South to all of the beaches.

Cool. In Chiang Mai check out the D2 hotel. ITs really nice. If you head to Phuket, I can get you her cousin's tour company info. They are very reasonable and good people. Staying with fam in BKK should save you a nice chunk of change. What beaches/areas are you guys looking at? We just spent all of December in Thailand. Remember Songkran is the 13-15 of April, like Thai New Year so you will have to book where ever you are staying for that time period soonish.

Two years ago, I basically criss crossed the whole country on a motorcycle. Trip report is here on .net if you search for it.

I actually spent 2 months there recently, learning to fly paramotor.

Nice parts of BKK are like a nicer, cleaner, swankier version of NYC.

The "mountains" are basically like a crappy version of Blue Ridge Mountains. It's nothing special. Cool if you live in Thailand making a domestic trip, but not worth flying 1/2 around the world to see.

The beaches look as amazing in real life as they do on postcards.

If you think Thailand is a 3rd world country, you will be disappointed. The stuff like the long-neck people and working elephants are just for tourists.

The known attractions tend to be over run by tourists. The whole country is full of back packers.

Your family over there should be your guide and you should take advantage of their knowledge and contacts as much as you can.

Check out Idiot Abroad Thailand episode for some laughs.
