Turn off your lights! - February 20, 2009, 02:13 PM

On March 28, 2009 at 8:30 p.m., local time, World Wildlife Fund is asking individuals, businesses, governments and organizations around the world to turn off their lights for one hour -- Earth Hour -- to make a global statement of concern about climate change and to demonstrate their commitment to finding solutions. Turn out. Take action

http://www.earthhourus.org/main.php

In IN!!

Let's get together at a meeting spot (bar, etc) and turn off the lights...lol.

I keep my lights on at night for safety. If my wife isn't home I am even more scared!

For one hour?

Generally speaking, incorrect.

But in some cases, correct.

I'm in, if possible.

Right up the 1 hole.

Not trying to bash, but wanted to offer something...

I spent some time working with operators in an electric utility control room, the dispatchers that actually fire-up and regulate the power plants. They told me that sudden demand changes can have a catastrophic effect on the frequency and result in tripping-off units in an extreme case.

As well intentioned as the idea is (and remember that it's not likely to affect loads much at all), the possibility that demand could suddenly be curtailed by many megawatts at a particular time of day may actually INCREASE cost as units would have to be cycled off and on. Think of it as saving gas by shutting your car off at every stop sign for a few seconds.

If you were an anarchist who wanted to create chaos, you would try to cause an instantaneous drop in electricity demand over a large area at a scheduled time. The frequency (60hz on our side of the US) would spike and cause multiple outages and rolling blackouts. Even without regard to repair cost, it would RAISE electricity prices on a per KWH basis.

Still, it's not likely to do any harm at all on a limited scale, and could send a good message about conservation. I especially love the part about meeting at a bar!

I don't know anything about power plants or even electricity...but if we all meet at one place (ie bar), our homes will already have the lights off, so in effect we really only turn off the lights of one place....which shouldn't be too bad. No? lol.

I changed all the bulbs in my house to florescent ones. Even if I turn on all my lights, I'm still only drawing the power of like a single 12 watt incandescent. I think...if my math is right.

The system operators will appreciate your patriotic gesture, Ben. They won't need to hit the fast-start gas units (more expensive than slower-starting baseload coal and nuclear power plants).

Tesla is turning over in his grave at these well-intentioned but misguided efforts to reduce consumption. Isn't there a better time than now to discourage consumption? There is if you worry about systemic failure of the economy like I do.

NOW we're talking! Let's leave the lights off at the bar too. I'll be better-off. Funny thing, every time I go to a bar, they end-up turning the lights ON and throwing me out.

It's roughly the same concept as turning your car off at a light. It takes more gas, in most instances, save a very very long light, to restart your vehicle than to simply idle.

I like the gesture, though, Mirelli. I am a big proponent of sustainability.
