UFC 79 fight...what did you think? - December 31, 2007, 07:17 AM

Liddell was playing it safe, trying not to get knocked out. 3rd round he kept on looking at the clock, staying towards the outside. Was trying to win by points.

Silva kept on charging no matter what, I think it is his 1st or 2nd UFC match, different rules than PRIDE.

Hughes and Pierre had a good fight. I thought Hughes was getting ready to let St. Pierre break his arm and then continue to fight

Liddell won decesion in 3 and Hughes lost in 2 due to a arm bar submission

Can't choose between the R1 and the 10R so I am keeping both but settled with an 1198S when I came home

I've seen better UFC fights but, considering how lame the last have been (relatively speaking) this wasn't so bad. Liddell was a little coy but with time ticking away and your opponent losing, why risk it and get knocked out?

I hear ya shipteey. Liddell is no dummy.

If you are ahead all smart fighters (think old De la hoya) will dance away. To me UFC is like fighting Tyson, the ability to get knocked out or loose the fight is only seconds away so why not preserve a victory.

Liddel/Vand fight was only interesting because everyone has been looking forward to it for many years. Otherwise, it was lame. I mean, it was all stand up, with what, maybe 3 decent strike exchanges total? I would rather watch boxing. GSP fight was much better...

I went 3 and 1 with my predictions.

Chuck had a lot more to give but he played the fight smart. Silva is a great fighter but he lost because he was fighting to prove he was better then a UFC fighter where as Chuck needed the win to keep his carreer going.

Hughes was the only fight I wasn't correct on but it was pretty obvious he was no where near as prepaired for that fight as he claimed to be.

God Speed Jeff! You'll never be forgotten.

BOOSTZX3 : in all seriousness head injuries ain't no joke. I've had around 10 concussions and now I ride a Buell Don't let it happen to you!

Like many MMA fans, I had been waiting for a Liddell/Silva fight for years. I would say that Liddell did a better job of sticking to his game plan...staying outside Silva's reach and delivering those long left hand jabs and looping overhand rights. Silva never managed to get inside long enough to deliver his punishing knees and elbows. It really was a technical fight...but not the slugfest that was anticipated. Fact is, I wanted Liddell to win but had money on Silva. Good for Liddell though.

Hughes/St. Pierre was a surprise. Hughes has a rep of being exceptionally cocky (but the cajones to back it up.) Expectations were that there was no way that Hughes would allow GSP to take him out twice...I thought for sure Hughes was going to administer a little payback. He already announced on the Ultimate Fighter that he felt he had maybe two or three more fights left in him and then he wanted to move on to other things (for what that's worth.) GSP, besides being well liked and respected in and out of the octagon, is often described as being one of the most athletic and capable fighters in the sport. I don't think anyone was more surprised than GSP when he beat Hughes the first time....but he was more confident this second time. He was on his game and deserved the win. I didn't see the expected performance from Hughes.

For anyone that's interested, I watched the fights over at The Exchange Saloon in DC (1719 G Street NW) my buddy, George, just bought the place and has committed to showing future UFC PPV events. There's numerous flat screen tv's throughout the place and one big projection screen in a main room for the fights. For this fight it was a small but enthusiastic crowd of guys and girls watching the fight but I think it will be catching on for the next fight.
