Very, very simple tech question - March 16, 2009, 03:01 PM

It doesn't get any easier, just want to check with the pros.

I work from my personal laptop while at the office. We have 1 Bizhub 160 in the office, and 1 PC running XP. The PC is very, very, very weak.

What are my printing options given the above setup?

I could just buy myself another printer, but....

I guess I am the Suck because I don't even understand your question.
Are you trying to print to the printer at work from home?
If trying to print to the printer at work from your laptop while at work, is it setup on the network as a network shared printer? If so just add it to your laptop and when at the office you can print to it.
If not whomever took "ownership" of the printer can share it and you can browse to that machine, click on the printer name and it was add to your machine if the os's are the same. Otherwise you will have to add additional drivers on the "print server" for your OS to make it simple or just have your OS cd ready to add the drivers.

My bad.

I need to print from my laptop to the bizhub, which is primarily connected to the other PC.

There are a thousand ways to do this, I know. Just looking for some different ideas.

Is that bizhub printer on the network? Can you share it out? You might just be better off buying a printer of craigslist and setting it on your desk...

Not sure I full understand either. If you're in the office and the printer in hooked up to another workstation, go to Run, type in \\computer name (the one the printer is hooked up to), then go to printers and faxes and double click on the printer.

I hope that helped.

here is the kicker, no bluetooth or wireless.
You could buy a switch, some ethernet cable and join your two pc's together while at the office. Then he could share the printer.

Also, if it's USB you can use a Mac AirPort as a print server (if you want wirelessness)

Yeah that's what I'm leaning towards.

So that one PC does not access the internet at all? Just want to make sure its not in fact wired/wireless. (hopefully not dial-up).

That would join them together but not hand out IP addresses which would require him to have a static IP which he shouldn't do as it would screw him at any other site including home(unless they would run apipa - uh no). I would go with a router and print straight to the biz hub and not run into issues from sharing and why you can't print when the pc is not on.

Put a static at work and go back to dhcp at home.
Your way would work too. As woody said, many options.

I would also say get a wireless router so you can be anywhere in the office as running cable sucks and so do cables on the floor.
