volunteers with 4x4 vehicles and your local hospital - February 4, 2010, 10:43 AM

Just want to let folks know this.

Every time there is a big storm, i call my local hospital (potomac) and have them put me on their list of volunteers.

Lots of times Doctors and nurses cant get to the hospital or leave b/c they dont have transportation.

The volunteer coordinator at the hospital will call you if someone lives reasonably close to you that needs a ride.

It is something that you can really help your community.

They are not usually as organized as they should be.

So if you call and ask for the coordinator and you get the run around, have them forward you to the ER head nurse. He/She is usually the most knowledgeable about this.

Just my PSA for the day.

Ask Rick about this. He did this once and it was the last time he said he'd do it. He'd call the nurses and doctors before he got to their house and a majority of them would make every excuse saying that they did not have to go. Then they wouldn't answer the door.

Rick became very jaded after that.

...I hope your experiences will not be the same.

I drove people all over in December. Had a great time doing it and everyone thanked me. Even if you don't pick people up, nurses would rather get a ride home than bunk up in the hospital.
