VW Guys... Hep Meh! - November 7, 2011, 05:18 PM

Hopefully there are some VW guru types out there that might be able to help me out. Here is the deal:
Wife's car: VW Beetle, 2.0 AVH engine
CEL on, code P0420 (Catalyst Eff. Below Threshold)

Now, I've done some looking, but there has been no info on the webs that tells me weather or not to change the O2 sensor (post cat) first or if I should just do the cat......or both. A lot of info pointing to one or the other but none as far as results. I really just need to get it done, as it is due for emissions next month and I don't want to wait.
Also, Is anyone aware of an extended emissions system warranty on 2003 and newer VDubs? Some internet chatter about a 10 year/ 80k mile. We're out of the 3/36 warranty but have yet to reach 80k.
Thanks, all!

edit: Fuel economy seems to be as per usual (according to her, but she does use the trip odometer at each fill up). Also, no apparent rattle in cat.

sensors are usually cheaper than cat, I'd start with that first....

Yeah, and that would be my route if I can't find more specific info. I just hate to toss parts at something and hope.
That is what my bikes are for

When that code came up on my AEG 2.0 Jetta it was actually the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF Sensor) that was bad which was messing whatever it controls which in turn messed up other readings for sensors. I replaced it and everything was fine after that. Maybe try some MAF cleaner. It's like 5 dollars at walmart and might do the trick. Don't use brake cleaner or you will surely be buying a new unit.

For everything cheap (but genuine) VW check out OEM / Performance Parts for Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Mini, Porsche & Volkswagen - ECS Tuning

They rock. Good luck.

Had a 1.8T GTi with that code for years. it had an aftermarket exhaust, blow-off valve, intake, etc. Picked up a cheap OBD scanner to turn the CEL and reset codes. had it to two performance VW shops (NGP Lorton and Gemini in PA). both said not to worry about it. just need to reset to pass VA inspection

Ok basically I was told you need to contact your dealer. What is covered each year under the emissions warranty changes from year to year.

Cat will be covered for 8 years / 100K miles.

I would RECOMMEND replacing the O2 sesnors once it has been replaced. I would also recommend doing an A/F induction service after it's all said and done to blow out the carbon build up. Thats what usually causes these types of issues.

God Speed Jeff! You'll never be forgotten.

BOOSTZX3 : in all seriousness head injuries ain't no joke. I've had around 10 concussions and now I ride a Buell Don't let it happen to you!

Yeah, was thinking to do the O2's anyway, as they're pretty inexpensive. Although Cuban hooked me up! O2's reading fine but one is out of range probably indicating a f'd up cat. I believe that the voltage output is inversely proportional to the reading.
Anyway, gonna holla at VW again and give them the Vag file. Thanks Cuban, and everyone else too.
We'll see where this thing goes!
