hey man..
this insect that you so fascinated with is from the moth family.. it is big.. but is essentially just a giant moth.. where they come from i dont know.. but i do know that they have the same life cycle as a regular moth. its pretty cool.. oh and the chill alot up on high elevation.. they are soo big even there flight is kinda wierd.. not exactly a smooth flight..

If there's any entomology buffs out there they could probably give a more confident answer. I'm guessing maybe a Cecropia moth.
