What to buy--a new house or a designer cat? - May 30, 2008, 04:57 PM

Seems that inflation has taken its toll even in the pet world. Your friendly little kitten is no longer free, but costs anywhere between $22,000 and $130,000!

http://shop.lifestylepets.com/asheraultrakitten.aspx

Of course, financing is available!

Price: From $22,000.00 to $130,000.00

The ASHERA EXOTIC CAT is considered one of the rarest domestic cat available today. A proprietary blend of the exotic bloodlines of the African Serval and the Asian Leopard Cat subsequently crossed with a rare domestic cat, the ASHERA grows up to 30 pounds (14 kg).

The Snow Ashera is a rare version of the standard Ashera and differs in that the background color is white instead of the brown caramel seen in the standard cat. The result is a striking animal that resembles the famed white tigers. The Royal Ashera is rarer still, with less than four kittens produced each year. The Royal Ashera has a cream background but uniquely, the spots and stripes are tiger orange, instead of black. The Royal Ashera is indeed the rarest domestic cat in the world and will be enjoyed by just a few. All ASHERA kittens are hand delivered to your residence (U.S. residents only).

Delivery: 12 months from order (may vary for the Royal Ashera). Please note that international prices differ and will display when selecting "International" in the My Location option.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PRICE SHOWN ABOVE LEFT WILL CHANGE AUTOMATICALLY AS YOU SELECT FROM THE CHOICES BELOW.

Financing available from $365 per month; please contact us for further information.

I think my aunt would be all over this. What happens when the cat dies from an inherent disease within the first year of ownership? Any kind of lemon law apply?

I was actually looking into buying a hybrid cat a while ago and actually they have been quite popular for quite some time now. Ive never heard of the cross mentioned above, but the cat I was looking into is referred to as a Bengal:

The bengal is actually a cross between a domestic cat and a true Asian Leopard. While they are expensive, they are no where near as pricey as that mentioned above. The Bengals, as with most hybrids, are available in different "degrees". You can get an F1 - one generation away from wild Leopard Cat. F2 - two generations removed. F3 - three generations removed and F4 - pretty much a domestic cat at this point. Of course the closer you are to the wild cat (F1 and F2) the more consideration you must pay considering they will still retain many of their wild traits. The Bengals have been likened to dogs because they love water, they can be taught to fetch, and they are very vocal. They can grow as big as 30 lbs, but again, the farther you get from the true Asian Leopard, the more domestic traits they will show (size included).

The cat pictured above actually looks like Safari, which is actually a cross between an African Geoffroy cat (similar to an Ocelot) and a domestic:

Ive never heard of them being that expensive although because of their rarity (breeding complications) they can be in the 10s of thousands of dollars.

They also have what is known as a Pixie Bob, which is a cross between a Bobcat and a domestic. Check out this site for info on the Hybrids:

There have been issues with this cat and other hybrid cats. Someone apparently tried to pass off another type of cat as the Ashera cat and exported it to Europe:

http://ashera-savannah-cat.blogspot.com/

From the breeder of the Savannah currently labeled "Ashera cat" in the Netherlands:
US Fish and Wildlife met with me at my veterinarian's to extract blood from my Serval and egyptian mau. The blood samples went directly from my vet's hands into the hands of US Fish and Wildlife who packaged and sent express to Netherlands government. I was notified yesterday by Netherlands officials that the blood samples have arrived safely and their Forensic labs are busy at work. Patience is a virtue, as they said it may take up to two months for them to extract all the information they need from the DNA to resolve all the issues of this case.
I also received more photos of my kittens they have and they look well taken care of, clean and happy and in good weight.
I will keep you up to speed on this case as facts come in.
Chris

The cat does come with a 1 year warranty!

And the breeder apparently requires you to pay $1,500 additional for hand delivery. The deliverer will stay a few days to ensure the transfer is ok. Because the cat can be wild, you also have access to a cat behaviouralist for 10 years!
