Thumbs up What Makes a Dirtbike Street legal in VA!?!? (BAJA500 PICS) - July 29, 2008, 09:45 AM

Haven't posted in a while, but have kept up-to-date on all the news. Sold the rebuilt and fightered SV a couple months ago and turned all my attention to riding dirtbikes, also just finished the Baja500 in June on an 06 Yamaha Raptor 700R (Craziest thing I've ever done, but we did finish)!!!

So I miss riding in the streets and the great gas mileage of bikes, but I like dirtbikes to much to stray away from them...

I'm most likely buying a DRZ-400, that has been converted properly in the state of PA to a street legal DRZ (lights, brakes, ignition, blinkers, tires, etc, etc).

Does this mean it will be street legal and easily registered here in VA? Any help or advice is appreciated, thanks

You're good without turn signals, but you will need a mirror. If its a DRZ-E make sure the brake light banjo bolt hookup was done. DOT tires and you are good to go. Stock exhaust?

let me know if you need stock rims....mine are for sale . If you need an inspection, my guy will do it for you.

so.... SM track?? roll ons?

Baja pics?

Why not pick up a factory converted DRZ? You know they did it right.

It wasn't to bad, spent most of the time off of the seat, using the legs as another form of suspension...didn't take any major falls, ran into a small tree once (it was either that, or running down a 100+ foot cliff).

It took our team 19 hours, 59 minutes, and 44 seconds to finish. We finished 11th in our class (not to bad for our first time).

After we finished racing, I couldn't swallow any large amounts of food, my throat was so swollen because of the sand, dust, silt that was kicked up by other quads, bikes, trucks, and buggies....but it was KICK-ASS!!!!

We are doing it again next year (2009 Baja500), will be running most likely another Yamaha Raptor 700R and also a YZ-450F (will start work on those ASAP to "Baja prep" them)

My admiration to you for running the Baja 500. Awesome.

With regards to converting dirt bikes to street-legal. It was my understanding that the VIN# may be your most limiting factor. Evidently, some series of VIN #'s are off-road only. Though, you may have better luck with a DRZ400 as it at least has one factory, street-legal version.

Its the craziest thing you'll ever do, probably the scariest to, but its worth every second of it, I can't wait to go back and do it all again in 2009, here is a video of me at one of the random independent pit stops (~RM340)
