What is the Purpose of Instagram? Why Is It Worth $1B? - April 29, 2012, 10:55 AM

You buy a phone with an 8 megapixel, 1080p capable built-in camera and download an app to make your photos look like you shot them with 1970s 126 Film in turn making your vibrant, crisp, high resolution photos look old, shitty, and off colored?

...and this company in turn is worth $1 Billion dollars?

What exactly am I missing?

Sidenote: Same goes for Pinterest.

Agreed. I don't see Instagram as having ANYTHING proprietary. Shit is stupid.

Everyone on facebook is a wannabe professional photographer now, so i guess someone caught onto that, created an app, and banked.

Seems like the best thing to do is target a younger audience, start or make an existing trend better, sell it then get out. Things get so popular so quick now days, but die off just as fast.

The issue is doing stuff like Gaussian blur and softening up photos is a hassle for people not to mention they just don't have the eye for it. They get this app and achieve similar results instantly. The first app that makes it easy and affordable eats the early worm. But I agree it's pretty useless.

either
1) Zuckerberg feels like he got a deal
2) It was worth $1B to claim it before Twitter or Google did.

Twitter is another one.
20% of the content is useful, funny, insightful.
The other 80% is mind vomit from people who want you to follow them.
