when people sell cars, why do they....... - April 17, 2012, 08:58 AM

When people are selling cars why do they think that just because they had all the maintenance (ie. timing belt, brakes ect.) completed that their car is worth so much more then its value.

Went to look at a car and the guy wanted almost 1000 more then its worth cause he just had all this and that work done. It doesn't matter dude if all that work is done then that just means your car is worth its top value not over it.

Shit, should of asked more for my bike since I replaced a $1300 ecu.

They think there is a premium to be paid by the buyer since thy are saving you money.

Flawed understanding of value is what they possess.

sorry got to rant,

so i thought you were asking a high price to only gain the truely interested, and then going to negociate giving the buyer a felling of a good deal.

Dude you are asking over dealer retail in excelent condition:
- cv boot torn and joint needs to be replaced
- tires are junk yard special (all great condition almost new, but all different)
- abs needs to be serviced
- egr valve needs to be replaced
- dent in corner panel, and half of bumper is rattle canned

Um, NOT excelent condition

But overall pretty solid car, and + on new brakes (hub assemled rotors which are a pain in the ass) + on new timing belt, water pump, and pullys.

I offering cash well over true market value of private seller, and well over other similiar cars. oh and i just sold the same car 2 years ago for 1/3 of the price you are asking.

My dad had four new tires, brake pads, synthetic oil/filter change done on his old truck and sold it for $1k more then what it was worth.

Dont like the deal, move on. Someone out there will pay it.

I was still offering well above value for it. I would of offered more but had more issues to be resolved as stated above.:

- cv boot torn and joint needs to be replaced
- tires are junk yard special (all great condition almost new, but all different)
- abs needs to be serviced
- egr valve needs to be replaced
- dent in corner panel, and half of bumper is rattle canned

Exactly why we have the rules in the classifieds section.

No, I don't care if your brother's cousin's former roommate bought something identical for 1000$ less. Here's my price, if you don't want to pay it, gtfo. Someone eventually will or I will drop the price later.

that's why i told him good luck with the sale, and call me if you change your mind. funny though cause the guy seemed real press to sell it, was still trying to make a deal as i was leaving. told him my offer was fair, he even said it was more then anyone else has offered.

I love when they open up their ad copy with: "Price to Sell"
No, really? You would price something to sell and then offer it for sale. Genius.

I usually look for cars that need things but don't have them done. If the car I want is say $10k. I'll look for a $7k that needs work. Then I can put $3k into it and know that x and x have been done and done right. Instead of Joe Blow saying x was done.. but shortcuts and the cheapest parts were used.

What are you looking for? Chances are someone here knows someone with one for sale.

Then again... That's just me.

i do the same. when ppl say timing belt is changed some times its just the timing belt. when i do a timing belt i change the belt, tensioner, idler, all the seals, water pump etc. cant trust anybody with words.

if somebody put junkyard special tires chances of doing any repair right is very unlikely.
