Whitewater kayaking on the Shenandoah this weekend? - October 30, 2012, 08:01 AM

As of today, it's at 3000 cubic feet per second, normally its around 700.

It's also at 3.5 feet, so the whitewater run should actually be pretty fun! If anyone wants to go Friday or Saturday let me know, I have the run laid out, and you will definitely need a wetsuit.

I'll probably just go down on an inflatable duckie for this one.

I'd be down for this. Are we talking class 3s? or 4s?

All I have are a couple whitewater kayaks, so I'd probably bring my old perception 3D. I have a dry top too so as long as I don't go for a swim I think I should be fine...

There may be one class IV (Staircase rapids and white falls) but the rest are 2's-3's normally. I imagine most of them would be 3's. I've never seen the shenandoah at levels like this.

It will be cold but you should be okay with a wetsuit. Fall season is where it's at for kayaking, unless you enjoy kayaking on rocks.

We would need 2 cars, one to park at the end and one to park at the drop zone. Unless you want to pay a local company 80 dollars to kayak.

I'm planning on going Friday or Saturday (my days off) assuming the water levels hold up.

Here's a chart showing the levels, and the average levels

USGS Current Conditions for USGS 01636500 SHENANDOAH RIVER AT MILLVILLE, WV

Wow, its at 10k CFS now, this might even be dangerous

That chart is crazy. I've done some class 5s in my time (lower chatooga river (5 falls)), but it was a long long time ago. I'm sure I'm quite rusty. When I moved up to this area I played around and below great falls a bit in the surf there.

I don't have the rack for my Jeep anymore - I usually just shove my kayak out the back window and tie it to the passenger "oh shit" handle.. so I can really only carry one this way.

If you can carry two boats then we should be good.. Or I can just drop my boat at the top, lock it up, drive to the bottom, and then we shuttle back up to the top with yours...

Lots of shuttling but it can work.

Where are you planning on putting in and taking out?

the levels are falling pretty fast, I'm going to check them tomorrow afternoon and see how they're holding up before I decide if I'm going to go or not.

The best put-in spot is off Millville rd in WV. You can pay a rafting company $2/boat to park your car, also there's a less chance of a break-in when you do this. The first mile or so is flatwater so you can prepare yourself.

The take-out spot is near the exxon/potomac wayside park. I don't remember the exact name of the road I use but know how to get there, the park has some parking spots as well.
