Who has been to South Africa? - February 5, 2011, 04:09 PM

I'm going to South Africa in April to get married. We're there for 14 days, 13 nights and spending half our time in/around Capetown and the rest shark diving or on Safari.

I'm curious if anyone's been there (world cup maybe?) and has any tips or suggestions for while we're there.

Also, does anyone know if I can just pop a local virgin mobile sim card into my iphone 3gs and have it work for me while I'm around capetown?

My friend was raised and lives in Capetown. Will ping her and get back to you.

So long as your Iphone is unlocked, yes, the foreign SIM will work.

BTW - Vodacom may have better rates than Virgin.

Don't let anyone try to sell you on an Int'l Calling Card. Those things burn minutes at 2x the stated rate/minutes when you call using a mobile phone. They're only good for calling from a landline.

My buddy (he's from there) said don't get jacked, and make sure your girl is safe. South Africa is a pretty rough place if you decide to go out of the touristic path...

Yeah, we've got the info on the good areas, the ones you taxi through and when to hire a bodyguard.

She's also not taking her engagement ring.

Been all over Africa many times all you need to do is chage the SIM card. I usually get a pay as u go phone so its not traceable to me something to think about. Dude is right stay in the white areas.... South Africa is getting really ghetto in the past few years from the masses coming from Rhodesia. I was stationed at the Embassy there for a bit so I know. I been to many parts of Africa so if you have any questions PM me ... So far I been to South Africa, Tunisia, Algeria, Morroco, and Rhodesia .... my personal advice is get married in the USA dont feed their economy.... the only thing good to come from South Africa was Glyn Bindon the founder of Trijicon.

I'd probably listen to Dean on this one. Everything I've heard from guys working in Africa said do not go there. Almost took a job in Nigeria until I was talked out of it. Plus, with all the shit going on in the northern part of the continent, bring a PSD team with you

I went diving there and did a safari in April '09. It was a group thing; we had a guide for our time in Capetown; stayed in the nicer parts and felt fine but being aware of surroundings us always prudent.

Diving was at Rocktail Beach Camp in KwaZulu Natal, roughly five hours east of Durban by bus/jeep. People there were great, diving was pretty good and you feel very isolated from the rest of the world (first time I'd ever seen miles of totally undeveloped beach). We took an afternoon to ride some 4 wheel ATVs and had a blast; beautiful country. Don't let the camp in the name fool you, it's really nice.

Safari was at Phinda Forest Lodge; a couple if hours from Rocktail. Accommodations were very nice, scenery was fantastic and the people were very good; plenty of wildlife and tourist friendly.

All places I went would be fantastic for a honeymoon. It's a beautiful country and won't be too hot in April since they're transitioning into autumn. That's most of what I remember but feel free to hit me up with any questions.

What she sent me...

This is a useful website for tourists Welcome to Cape Town & the Western Cape - Official Website of Cape Town & the Western Cape
*
April is Autum. So very mild temperatures with light rainfall. They should bring warm and cool clothing.
*

Table Mountain (cable car and hiking - weather permitting)

Green Point Cubana *
*
Shopping:
Canal*Walk - Century City
V&A Waterfront
Green Market Square - tourist shopping (negotiate and take a local with if you can)
*
Travel Tips:
Week day Peak hour traffic 6am - 9am and 4pm - 6pm
Avoid public transport
Tip waitors 10%
Don't talk on your cell phone in public it might be snatched
Pay parking attendants in coins (anything from R1, R2, R5)
Always have change on you for parking
Don't roll down your window at stop streets or red robots
Don't take money out in public (on the streets)
Don't keep valuables and cameras in plain sight when walking in busier areas – this can prove all too tempting for opportunists. Keep valuables locked up safely and be cautious.
Don't be tempted to give money to the street children you see – heartbeaking as they are. Instead, visit The Homestead or one of the other many organisations working to help street children, and support the work that these groups are doing.
Never attempt to hike Table Mountain alone, without a map or Cape Town tour guide. Hikers can easily get lost, fall or get stuck and with the weather turning within minutes it can be very easy to lose your bearings on the mountain.
Never leave your belongings on the beach while you swim – always ensure that someone stays to guard your bags, and take turns to keep things safe.*
*
Hope this helps..

Africa is rough, South Africa because of the remaining racial tensions. Beautiful, and picturesque but you need to watch yourself. There's a saying about South Africa... it's not a matter of if you'll get robbed, it's when you'll get robbed so do what you do in a 3rd world country. Stay in well lit areas with people, take marked taxis, don't wear a watch you're not ready to give up and keep a bit of pocket cash to toss at someone. Inside of the regular tourist enclaves the worst you should see is pick-pocketing.

My girlfriend and her family lived in South Africa for 6 years. Kruger park is on the exact opposite side of the country but so cool, I definitely will be going there. Cape Town is in better shape than Pretoria or Johannesburg in terms of crime, but register with the consulate there.

Shark diving, lots of water sports, safaris, there's a lot to do. Try the prawns
