Why are drivers so ANGRY around here?! - June 8, 2012, 07:06 AM

[RANT]
Ok so this is a fourth experience in less than 2.5 months, here we go...

1) Riding my bike through a fairly slow semi-residential street, I veer towards the side of the car in front while coming close to a speed bump. The car literally swerves towards my bike as it to purposefully hit it. A little bit later the guy literally pulls to the side a bit and slows down just so he can scream at me from inside a closed window as I slowly passed by him. He had what appeared to be a full family in the car.

2) Same street but in my car this time again moving very slowly. No trying to hit anybody but as the lady is going into the right turn lane I slowly pass her on the left and I see her lower the window just so she can fully turn her head to scream at me full volume. No family in car.

3) PW Pkwy while fairly empty I'm passing a car going the speed limit and I'm going 10-15 over. The moment he sees that I will have to go in his lane he tries to floor the gas to block me even though I was basically already in front of him, had my turn signal on, he had a car in front, and there was a light turning red up ahead. I went ahead and proceeded with the lane change and because of his speeding up so hard he ended up veering into the left turn lane. Instead of hitting the gas he tried to keep on speeding to push back into the now non-existing space in front of me. He almost crashed. He had his teenage daughter in the car.

4) I-66 West this morning I am coming up to my exit, again driving faster than traffic flow by a couple miles per hour, free flowing traffic. I need to get into the off-ramp and there is about 2 car lengths between a car and a commercial truck in front of him so I put my turn signal and softly get into the space. The guy behind me start working that horn like a maniac and starts tailgating me within inches. So I slam on brakes a couple of times. He gets so worked up but by the time we are on the main road he gets stuck in traffic and ends up far behind me. He gets unstuck from traffic and comes up flying to get next to me and keep blaring his horn then look at me and start screaming like a mad man (he was literally getting red). He then tried to cut in front of me but I took away any space between cars so he couldn't.

In all of these my only response to people's screaming was to point and laugh except for the guy that almost crashed with his daughter in the car. The point of this conversation is not pointing out what I may have done right or wrong to "justify" people's reaction. I know there are infinite things I could do different every minute of the day. The focus of this discussion is why people REACT the way that they do?!

I am guilty as well of seldomly doing the "speed up to not allow someone in" move, but once I see that they are coming in anyways my response is to just slow the heck down and keep on keeping on. If they slow down my path of travel then I will find a break to get around them and keep going like nothing ever happened.

There is a difference between driving aggressively and aggressive driving. I wonder when this phenomenon really took off cause when I was younger the term road-rage only referred to people passively screaming in their car. Not using their cars as weapons of vengeance or going out of their way to make sure their screams were "heard". Then it evolved to people actually fighting on the side of the road, and now to people even using their cars as weapons. Thing is that the people that seems to have gotten worse is the generation Older than I am, which makes even less sense. How did they all "un-learn" that cars are a dangerous weapon to wield?!

I think it's the same reason dogs react so violently to certain things. Some things (like motorcyclists and postal workers) just trip a wire in some people's brains and they can't help but bark

I've had a guy follow me, stop behind me at an intersection, get out of his car and start coming towards me screaming. Why? Because I did 5-10mph over the limit on Compton Road and Union Mill. I should have gotten off the bike and slugged him with my helmet. Instead, I remembered his plate number (Local government plates), pulled in at the gas station, and called the police. Fuck 'em. It's that or someone is getting a new mirror.

This just in, people are dicks.

I would caution you against pointing and laughing, or in any way mocking them.

Not only are people dicks, but some people are fucking crazy as well. No need to risk the possibility of violence just to "win" some road rage

Good point, except dogs have been like that for centuries, but this driving phenomenon is fairly new. Plus it would make sense if it was some sort of "evolutionary" change and it's mostly the new generations that have a new way of doing things. But instead it's the older generations that have changed their ways for the way worse.

I always think about this during the encounter but then I realize that I am selfish cause I would rather not delay my day by following them and reporting them, so I let it go and keep driving. The less selfish approach would be to report them and hopefully contribute to these situations happening less. So....maybe it's a huge increase in blind selfishness driven by the demands on timeliness that today's society places on us. <shrug>

I don't know why I get so much enjoyment out of messing with people with road rage... If I see someone raging because of something I may have done, I usually laugh - which makes them even madder.

Probably not a great idea when I meet the one guy who snaps and starts shooting.

You know, when I saw that guy's face this morning I did think it was funny, but then I thought about what you said. That guy looked loco.

Yeah man. In Miami people drive aggressive as fuck. All fast and cutting in front of everyone. And people are always screaming at each other After The Fact. But up here people are ready to start screaming at you and stopping you from doing anything Before you even do anything.

Plus if someone really wants to get back at you it's usually a fun thing because that means a STREET RACE has just begun. WIN!

Your rant is about people learning a car is a dangerous weapon, when you "slammed on the brakes a couple times" because someone was tailgating you.

Seems legit.
