Wifey Smashed up the Saab - Find Parts or Junk It? - December 6, 2011, 12:54 PM

My wife had a run in with a bumper of an SUV last night on the Beltway, it was less than 10mph but her lovely 99 SE Turbo Saab took the brunt. She hit the with her front passenger side, buckled the hood, smashed the headlight assembly, fender will need to be replaced and there's anti-freeze leaking. The shop said it's totaled, and to them and most people it is. Likely $3-4000 in repairs which is about the value of the car (we don't have collision ins). I'm a handy dude and I'm not willing to write off our Saab just yet. Has anyone here bought a hood, fender, headlight assembly, etc off of ebay, craigslist, junk yards and fixed it at home? There might be some mechanical damage given the antifreeze spill, so perhaps a radiator as well. We just spent 2k last month on 4 tires, shocks, ball joints, and the car only has 105k miles, runs great without a squeak or a rattle. I'm looking forward to a winter project, or should I just say scrap it?

Yup they have been for about 30 years. I have a bit of an affinity for the quirky brand.

Chances are that the damage is deeper than what you can see. I would be willing to bet that the core support is pushed back and the the inner fender is also moved a bit. I say this because there is antifreeze leaking. All the parts that would cause a leak are located behind the core support on most all cars. I would recommend that you sell the car for scrap and move ob. Use the money you save trying to fix it to get full coverage on your next car.

^^^Agree.
Sometimes what looks like aesthetic front end damage, turns out to be much more once you remove some parts.

You may be able to get parts at discount. Saab filed for bankruptcy today and will be forced to liquidate and reorganize.
