1st off - always back the things up before you delete..

2nd. Those look like installation/backup directories. When software installs it self - it will sometime create rollback / backup directories that contain the original files...

I would create a new folder - call it 2bedeleted or something... Move the directories to that location.. Reboot and see it all is good ... If so delete em....

If they're standard windows updates, they should just be uninstall files in the event a patch fuk'd your shit up and you have to roll back. Deleting doesn't have any adverse effects other than you lose your ability to uninstall the update.

I agree! NEVER use someone else's old OS and files as you will just inherit their old problems.

Wipe the drive clean (Not using Windex silly) but with software such as Wipe Drive and install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

Yeah...I have heard that. How come porn has so many viruses? Is there a method to that madness?

easy to conceal malicious code in larger file content. its also very easy to start a porn site and get mad hits.

So do you think the Virus elimination Program people at Norton & McVee, etc. write this stuff and put it out there so men will buy antivirus programs before their wives & girlfreinds find out they have been surfing porn?

Conspiracy Theory? I mean who better to write the stuff than the people selling antivirus?

Porn on WebSites is a cut throat biz - everyone wants a piece (pun intended).. The porn sites sell advertizing to other porn stuff - other sites, dvd's, toys, etc.. .The more hits a certain site gets - the more $$ they can charge there advertisers. As it's all electronic - it's verifiable - unlike tv commercials or mag advertizing... You can determine exactly what web pages referred or brought you to a specific site.

As that many folks won't admit to surfing for porn - they wont mention strange computer related behavior after visiting specific sites. So if someone searches a porn site and winds up with a nasty virus or bot - they are apt to let it ride for longer than if something happened updating word or a normal program. Some programs do nothing but continually hit or take a user to a specific site - usually NSFW - etc... (however, there are nasty folks who put mal ware - that will do bad things to you computer and data for fun)

At present - nobody seems to care if it's a person who is ACTUALLY looking at a site - vs - a bot/virus that takes you there automatically (against your will), it's all bout hits and numbers...

I once read that this guy had a deal with the porn sites and got 25 cents a hit and he used to buy the most popularly mispelled site by small children and it would link them to the porn sites. Apparently he made millions a year doing this. This was several years ago, and apparently there are or were no laws against it

Well I think the laws changed slightly after this guy came to light.. .If I remember it correctly - this dickwad owned sites like dinsey.com dizney.com (basically all the commom misspellings of disney) - not to mention some other sites.... 1st off Disney has tons of $$ and I wouldn't put it past them to hire hit men - no kidding - they dont fuck around...

I don't remember all the details - but I think it was when you went to one of the mispelled name sites - like dizney.com - it would take you to another site - like chixwitdix or something... Thus, once person could own a shitload of sitenames but forward them onto a specific site.. Also about the same time - the internet was becoming more common place - so folks in the biz - started buying up domain names to get paid allot of $4 for em (commonly referred to as squatters).. I know of several who bought names like Chemical.com - etc and got HUGE sums of $$.

Don't quote me on it, but when folks started capitializing on name recongition of other propriatary names - it sort of became illegal. For example, it was someone locally that had PETA.org... I forget what for (might have been a squatter) but after things were changed - The people for the ethical treatment of animals (commonly known as PETA) - fought hard and got the site yanked (no kidding do a DNS lookup - it's on hold). .. I remember it - because in the beginning it got allot of press as owner change the site and it proclaimed "PETA -people eat tasty animals" on the home page - which I found amuzing... So, I believe the guy who bought things like dizney had his mispelled sites revoked and that as things like this are discovered now - they get revoked or further litigation gets involved, unless they can claim a legitmate reason to own the site.. Like perhaps your name or company happens to be dizney... It wouldn't be unreasonalbe for a porn company to use that name (I think) - but I would bet donuts - disney probably allready owns that name as well...

However, there are some interesting ramifications to this kind of law... Check out nissan.com... It's a computer company.. Apparently the guy's last name is nissan and he runs a computer company and he bought the name when nissan was still datsun (it was his bulletin board name). As he claims he has a rightful claim to the name - he is refusing to give it up to nissan motorcars..... It's also on hold... So far as I know - you can't capitalize on someone else's name - you get yanked unless you can show cause to use the name - but its not really illegal... Go figure... anyone else go any thoughts....
