Woman Sees Man View Porn On Library Computers

Library: Man Was Doing Nothing Illegal

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- A Montgomery County woman got a lesson on what you can and can't do at the public library, and it's what you can do that's got her upset.

Elizabeth Columber went to the new library in the Rockville Town Center to help her children with their homework assignment.

"I observed a man sitting right in front of me watching pornographic videos," Columber said. "I wasn't happy about it."

Columber said she managed to shield her 8-and 10-year-old's eyes.

"I really made a scene and I wanted to make a scene to let them know that this is not an appropriate thing," she said. "The gentlemen did shut down and he walked out."

Columber said she was upset because children were present and the computers were not being monitored.

But the library said the man was doing nothing illegal.

"We filter all of the computers in the children's room and those are accessible to children who are 13 years old and younger," said library spokeswoman Kathie Meizner.

But Meizner said Internet access is unfiltered in the general computers.

"We don't want to block access to constitutionally protected speech. We certainly intervene if we believe there is illegal activity," Meizner said.

The library offers privacy screens to limit peripheral views, but it doesn't help with straigh-on views.

Columber said that's not enough. She told News4 she doesn't believe porn should be accessible in the public library.

Columber got a letter from the library system apologizing for the incident and explaining their policies, but she said that's not enough and that they haven't heard the last from her on this issue.

What a stupid bitch. She wants to monitor it because she does not approve. Another republican cunt that disapproves so monitor and get rid of it. Lucky that wasnt me she tried to make a scene with. I woulda showed her ass up. I hope her kids grow up to be porn stars. Maybe she will be proud when her little girl gets jizzed on her face.

I think the dumbshit who was looking at porn needs to get his own computer at home. I don't want my kids to go in a public library and come across any material like that. Adrain do you want a kid to be looking at porn? I don't!! It would be very easy to block those sites and not block sites that people would have a need to go to. If the library has porn on the computer why don't they carry all of the porn mags then??? If this lady complains to the right people with enough support she will get her way. This falls under the comman sence rule. Why would you look at porn in public anyway? Whats next for the library, dark rooms so you can jerk off?

That's not the point. Why not censor Hawaian Tropic models? Why not censor information about drugs so kids can't read it? Why not censor myspace because pedophiles are on it? Why not censor Instant messaging fo rthe same reason?

The point is. You should not start putting restrictions on your freedoms. There was a privacy screen and the computers for children are blocked from porn. He was an adult and can do whatver he wants. THe common sense rule does apply. He was looking at it. It is there for a reason. Now if he was jerking off there then no. But porn could be a legitimate research. Who is this pinko bitch to decide what is appropriate? Maybe she shoulda minded her own business and not looked at what others were looking at on the internet then tried to embarrass the guy who was not breaking any rules.

Legality and morality seldom parallel. While the video watcher was legally in the clear, I would have probably ratted on him to the librarian. I don't have children but can fully understand the need to restrict what they are to see and hear until they are at the mental capacity to understand some of life's heavier topics.

The librarian can't do anything about it; he is legally allowed to look at porn at the library all he wants. He pays taxes too and the library is not there to decide what is "appropriate" for viewing; I'm sure there are a lot of books that people would deem inappropriate for their children to be reading too (not to mention magazines such as National Geographic).

However, you are not without options. Having talked to people that work at libraries, you ARE allowed to make the guy embarassed by pointing out to everyone around that he is looking at porn. At that point, most people would get up and leave (like this gentleman did). There is no privacy in a public library so as long as fellow patrons are not annoyed by you pointing out his viewing habits, go right ahead.

This "issue" has been around since the beginning of having internet in libraries and is very common... their policies are NOT going to change and they shouldn't. If you don't want your kids to see porn, don't let them use library computers. It is quite easy to make full use of a library (i.e. READ THE BOOKS) without having to go near the computers. YOU are responsible for making sure your children do not see what YOU think is inappropriate; trying to regulate what EVERYONE ELSE views because you are too lazy to do so is not a solution.

OK let me throw this out there for ALL YOU non parents!!! Lets say you are on an airplane and your kids are sitting in a seat next to a guy watching porn on his laptop. What are you gonna do? Move the kids yes complain why hell yes and then complain untill they make laptops illegal cause of some dumbass was watching porn. So wouldn't it be easier if people just used common sense and not watch porn or look at porn mags were a kid might even have the slightest chance of seeing it! It my not be illegal but if it is immoral rest assured that if enough people bitch about it they will try to make the action illegal. Yes libraries have a diffcult choice of protecting free speech but at the same time our society should be protecting our kids and making sure they have a nice safe as can be enviroment to grow up in. If people continue to use bad judgement then eventually socitey as a whole will step in and fix it so you will not have a chance to use your judgement!

common sense evades some people but lack of common sense should not cause legislation and restrictions.

If that were me on the plane I would ask the man to please not look at that. I wouldnt make a scene and then call for heads.
