As the remains of Air France Flight 447 are still being recovered after last week's crash in the Atlantic that saw all 228 people aboard lose their lives, this story has emerged in headlines today. As the Times online reports, an Italian woman who arrived late for the flight has been killed in a car crash:
Johanna Ganthaler, a pensioner from Bolzano-Bozen province, had been on holiday in Brazil with her husband Kurt and missed Air France Flight 447 after turning up late at Rio de Janeiro airport on May 31...
The ANSA news agency reported that the couple had managed to pick up a flight from Rio the following day.

It said that Ms. Ganthaler died when their car veered across a road in Kufstein, Austria, and swerved into an oncoming truck. Her husband was seriously injured.

A French news outlet reported Wednesday that two potentially suspect names had been identified on the passenger list by French intelligence services names that "correspond to people known for their links to Islamist terrorism." The report was not confirmed.

Reuters, who covered the update, also said that a French submarine with advanced sonar equipment is searching for the "black box" flight recorders and investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash:
In the search zone, where scattered pieces of debris including a large section from the aircraft tail have been recovered, vessels are trying to comb a rugged area of the ocean floor, thousands of metres below the surface...
Brazilian military search teams have recovered 41 bodies and moved some of them to the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha off Brazil's northeastern coast, which is being used as a base for the search operations.
The doomed plane sent 24 automated messages in its final minutes on June 1, detailing a rapid series of systems failures.
The speed sensors that gauge how fast an aircraft is flying have become the focus of the investigation after some of the messages showed they provided inconsistent data to the pilots.

ay ya yay
