I remember about 8 years ago when this started off as a lite app called Google Goggles.

At the time I was a minor investor in a ex-coworker's venture. He was developing an app that had dependencies on Google images and Google translate. The API would direct any image snapped with the camera phone to query Google's front end and give results that tried to identify the image and /or translate the characters.

It worked too. It wasn't perfect all the time clearly but it was good enough for the time in an era where you could release a trial period app for free and then ask $4.99 after 30-days to unlock all the features. Once we saw the Google's app which was a limited beta at the time and then the Android Nexus 1, we knew the writing was on the wall. The best we could hope for was a buyout ... hopefully from Google if we could make enough noise.

Lol.
