Working Overseas - Take 2 - December 8, 2009, 12:29 PM

I just wanted to take this opportunity to clear the air on a few things. This is what I do for a living, probably not unlike many others on this board and God knows the 100,000+ that are out there now.

What I don't want is people misconstruing the picture and painting "working overseas" as the Wild West and even as a laundry specialist, you're packing heat and ready to become the next Executive Outcome's trigger man.

Folks - it's simple. You support the Military. You live on a Military Base for the most part. If you do NOT live on a Military base and are inside of a combat zone, then you don't need to read this because you know how to play. For the rest who are entertaining this type of opportunity, let's get down to the nuts and bolts and really figure it out.

First: (a pet peeve of mine) - NO GUNS. NO GUNS. NO GUNS. You do not saddle up in your company sponsored, coach sectioned, COMAIR ride and nestle in between the two fat people in adjacent seating for the next 14 hours, and nod off, dreaming of the terrorists you'll be off'ing with your "personal boom boom stick" tucked safely away in your luggage below. Bottom line for the majority of today's contracting world, you're a non-combatant. Unless you're running security/intel, you don't need to carry. The old days of KBR sending truckers out almost by themselves through Iraq are gone. Everything is locked down now, hell, people stare at you funny when you walk out of a front gate by yourself with no equipment on.

Snapshot: All contractor jobs (that can be talked about here) are in direct support of the US Military and their mission in whatever combat zone (or peacekeeping zone) they happen to be in. If you're providing IT services, then you're providing IT services to your company's clients, be they Military/Civilian/Mix of both. If you're a food specialist, you're cooking food in a DFAC on a base. Could be a huge base, could be a small base... Either way - you are NOT carrying a side arm which is a wonderful thing. If the shit really hits the fan, lets be honest, there will be more than enough stuff lying around to pick up, you don't need to walk around like Billy Badass, snapping photos and posting them up on Facebook passing yourself off as a BlackWater type Operator. You will live on base, you eat on base, you shower on base, you travel from base to base in a MILITARY vehicle or an up-armored CIV vehicle in a Military convoy. You do not grab a vehicle, your nearest Afghan, a firearm, and press forward outside the wire to your next destination. First of all, because you will get yourself killed and secondly, as a contractor, you are a guest of the Military and they are responsible for your protection. The Military houses you, feeds you, clothes you, and provides for your via your company. Whether that's via direct support on the ground or payments to your company back in the rear with assets bought on the economy, Uncle Sam foots your bill.

Danger: Nothing to be scared of. Can you die? Hell yes, but you have a greater chance of getting killed riding your motorcycle than you do by indirect fire. When it's your time to go, it's your time to go, where you are doesn't matter. Most of what you will experience is indirect fire (mortars, rockets) and you have no control over this, nor can you anticipate it. Usually you just get your fourth point of contact into the nearest specified cover and wait it out. Are their IED's out there? Absolutely - but you can't do anything about them anyways so just sit back and enjoy the ride.

There really is too much information to go into here, but I just wanted to clear the air on this as I noticed that some folks had a skewed sense of what's out there and I don't think their questions were being answered.

Remember - your jobs parameters mark your left and right limits. (e.g) Whisper and I would get two different jobs out there, and his privileges would be different than mine. We would definitely cross paths, but our missions are not the same. Same for me or an IT person, or a "support specialist." Don't know the job's parameters? Just ask your recruiter while you're on the phone to get as many details as you need. Ask us...

Thanks for reading this - good luck if you do decide to do it and ask any and all questions Didn't mean to hijack your thread Chris2, just wanted a clean break so folks can post it up.

After reading your post, Afghanistan sounds no fun at all.

What are the coolest jobs you have seen/heard of out there? Any unusual positions?

You really expected Afghanistan to be fun? lol. If you want to go kick some towel heads in the face walk down to your local marine recruiter and tell them you want to go infantry.

All is clear. I don't think we ever had ideas/dreams of going out there and picking off Taliban or what have you. It was more like, "Hey - no matter how much they nice this place up to look like home, I'm in a god damn war zone and ultimately I am responsible for making sure I get home intact"

When I lived in Forte Green, Brooklyn during the height of the crack epidemic / drug gang wars, I was definitely not a combatant and I definitely wasn't a drug dealer or gang member - but I'd be damned if I went out and I wasn't strapped up in some fashion.

“Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. Hence a Prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires”.

Didn't say anyone did, however being able to carry isn't a factor on whether or not you get home intact.

Absolutely spot on on the last paragraph though. I'd rather have and not need then need and not have. CCW is one of the last dying freedoms I enjoy in this country.
