90+ minutes of exciting, riveting 1-1 scores with people whose names I either cannot pronounce or better yet, are so grossly enamored by themselves they only list and refer to themselves by a single name.

Yep, can't wait.

Brazil has bought this tournament. Why do they Brazil flop so much? I swear, for a second I thought I was seeing Dwyane Wade out there instead of Fred..

They are just making sure Brazil makes the final. Wouldn't do if the favored home team lost the first game. The flopping isn't just Brazil, it is an epidemic in modern soccer. Pretend you are hurt until the yellow card comes out then 2 minutes later they are fine. I like the game, but I hate the flopping.

This. Yellow/Red cards have a bigger impact on the game than the fouls in basketball (not talking flagrants, which aren't usually the result of flops). Two yellow cards/One Red card = Suspension the next match. If I was on the pitch I would flop too as necessary.

Yellow cards are huge. Some players will intentionally draw a second card to get suspended if they think the game after next is a tough opponent and their team can handle the team they're facing during the time they will serve their suspension.

The World Cup is a time of excitement and for all fans of that nation to get together celebrating a common union. Some magical things could happen even if your team is not as good as the other since these specific selection of players don't play with each other more than a handful of times per year. And often they may come from bitter rivalries.

But club football is where it's at... Your club team defines a large part of your life. Being a professional fan or fanatik is a privilege. At times you maim, stab, fight, kill for your team. You cry often but mostly because of tear gas from the police who just beat you with batons. You internalize hundreds of chants, songs, and other sounds mostly laced in a slew of derogatory phrases that violate everything from your mother to your past relatives and future children. These chants are sang by the tens of thousands at once often choreographed between the different stands. It's like being in a gang except in most cases you're highly educated, with a wife, and often multiple children (who must support your team when they get older if they don't want to be disowned)... ahhhh football...

Heist, normally I enjoy reading your point of view, as you bring a different perspective from mine to the table, and more often than not, you're well-informed... This post made you sound pretty ignorant... I'm disappointed

I hope no one's referring to the penalty kick which resulted in Brazil's first goal yesterday... I don't think so, but just in case the conspiracy theorists are arming themselves... It was a well-deserved penalty. Brazilian player was held back and there was no question about that.

I'm not a fan of the theatrics either, but on the other side of flopping, there's the player who fouls, knows he's fouling, and throws up his arms like "I'm not doing anything" right after he fouled, just like the Croatian that got the yellow yesterday.

Couldn't agree more about Heist's post concerning the Brazilians going by one name.

The penalty yesterday was a mixture of things. Definite foul by the croatian and a definite embellishment by Fred. The ref was left without a choice, but to call it.

Could Fred have battled through the small amount of contact? Sure. Could the croatian have played just as effective defense without restraining? Sure again. The ref had no other option that to call it.

If you don't want a foul called against you, keep your arms down and shoulder up on the person. It's much harder to call a penalty there without the Croatian's arm draped all over Fred's shoulder.

Oh, and the PK was Brazil's second goal. Neymar got the first one on that dribbler off the post that the Croatian goalie, who played fucking terribly, reacted late to and couldn't get a touch on it.

You didn't read the entire comment.
I closed off with <trollface>, i.e., I'm being overly facetious.

The penalty kick was Brazil's second goal, and yes that is exactly what I was referring to. The live announcers (seemed to be from GB somewhere from their accents) seemed to agree with me that it was a bad call. The US media seems to be downplaying it and not taking sides (of course, they don't want to lose viewers from the team that they side against).

The goalie interference call against Croatia in front of the Brazil goal was probably more of a 50/50 call. Could have gone either way, but would have been a good spot for a make up call from the bad call above. Unless the officials wanted to make sure Brazil won of course.

This is big time sports. It is all about money. The tournament will not make as much money if Brazil loses early. The US sports news stations will lose viewers if they take a solid stance either way, so they stay quiet.
