New railgun with discarding sabots:

Video: Railgun Blasts an Aerodynamic Round Seven Kilometers Through A Steel Plate | Popular Science

This amazing video, created by Defense Tech, shows the latest test of General Atomics' high-speed railgun. Where earlier attempts have fired ungainly missiles that tumbled end-over-end through the air like "hypersonic bricks," this one uses a sabot round, which flies straight and smoothly for a distance of seven kilometers, AFTER punching through a solid steel plate.

Round travels at Mach 5. Nice.
But I don't understand where all the explosive gasses are coming from if this thing is a railgun.

I thought railguns are giant electromagnetic slingshots that magnetically "fling" a projo out the barrel, no?

Could be the oxygen exploding from electricity traveling through it.

Yea I think that's it, such a tremendous amount of electricity and force causing an arc and ionizing the air,

True. However, when you think about it a tank shell - 2/3rds of it is nothing but powder and charge.
You want a faster kinetic round, add more powder which means more size and more weight.

This is nothing but sabot and projo which means it would probably be able to carry twice the number of rounds. If they decide to use DU penetraters - even nastier punching power.

That plus the big push for this type of weapon is to put it on ships, eliminating the need for dangerous magazines dealing with explosive powders. The biggest breakthrough with this is the incorporation of the sabot. Still new technology, still plenty of room to increase the velocity.

Rather than have to add more metal around the barrel and chamber to compensate for higher combustion pressures, all they really need to do with these is add a few more capacitors to increase the power

Very well put indeed, but we all know that in the end its going to come down to where they are going to put the continuum transfunctioner, right?

you've got two big assumptions:

1. weight/space of the equipment generating the power is negligable.

2. batteries/capacitors have greater energy density than the powder.

1. is definitely false and i'm pretty sure 2. is as well.
