Your Credit Report - June 23, 2011, 12:15 PM

Just thought I'd share something I've started doing recently with those who may not know how easy it is to check your credit score and see your credit report. For $1, you can get your credit report and credit score from freecreditreport.com. Just log on to the site, follow the prompts for the $1 reports and you can see everything on your report and where your score currently stands.

The catch:

1. It only shows your Experian score, whereas I think most lenders use your Equifax score to make decisions on lending/credit, but at least you get an idea of where you stand.

2. By signing up and paying the $1, you're automatically signed up for a $14.95 monthly membership that you have to call and cancel within 9 days. They make their money on those that don't call or don't read the fine print and miss the deadline. When you call, they will do their best to try to get you to keep your membership or even upgrade, just be firm and tell them you just want to cancel and they'll do it and send you an email confirmation. I just pay the $1, see my stuff, print it out if I need to, then call right away and cancel so I don't forget.

Hope this helps!

I'm still trying to figure out how to crack 800.

Yeah, I get my friend in Real Estate who has access to the same system to check mine for free every now and then.

Him: "Nope, not at 800 yet. Not close either."
Me: "Fuuuucckkk!"

I'm trying to figure out the new rules and evaluation metrics they instituted a few years back because it cut my score by 80 fricking points!

I find it funny that companies rely on credit scores when credit bureau's don't rely on income to debt ratio. Not only that but there is no real system to calculate the score, the 3 agencies have their own method to calculate them, and finally, they dont communicate with each other.

CantGetCaught & Heist,
That number only means something depending on what you're trying to get. Some home loan programs only need for you to have a 640 to qualify. IMO 640 is low and easy to achieve. 800? For what. You trying to finance something for a mil?
Credit scores are

Did that one once but if I remember correctly you gotta pay about $8 just to see your score. But thanks for mentioning that.

Credit scores are

What I find funny is that they won't divulge the formula for calculating your credit, yet any credit you apply for depends entirely on this number that you can't completely figure out how it's scored.

I don't need an 800 score, but I was irresponsible when I was younger, so now I'm trying to fix the mistakes that I made. I'd be happy with mid-700s.

Credit scores are
Because I can finance anything I want at the lowest interest rate available. 640... you can get a loan... but at a higher rate.
Rates are important. The more I save on interest... the more money I have in my pocket... and the lower my dept to income is... and the better my score gets.

Your debt to income does actual effect what you can buy, because it does actually effect your score. Everything is score driven, but your score is reliant on a lot more than just paying your bills on time.

Also, pay attention to your balances vs limits. This effects your score as well. For example; you have a credit card with a $5000 limit and a balance of $4850... thats not good. If you have a number of acounts like this... even worse. Even if you have never missed a payment on anything, but your balances are high in relation to the limits... you will have a low score. You are what we call "over extended."

In case you are wondering... yes, I am a credit snob. Its probably becasue I deal with it all day long. It gets so frustrating dealing with people who fuck up their credit then get mad at me when they can't get a car. Hey asshole, I didn't not pay your fucking bills.

Sure, but I'd rather pay $1 and do it from home in my underwear like I did last night.
