Zoey - a rescue dog story - April 2, 2009, 08:43 PM

Friday, my wife and I met Zoey. We fell in love. Tonight she finally came home, and I wanted to tell some people her story.

Zoey is a purebred American Bulldog. Zoey's owner probably bought her originally to breed with another bulldog, but eventually had her spayed. After a nasty divorce he left and Zoey was left, along with her intended mate, Bubba, with his ex-wife. She proceeded to leave the dogs in the back yard, unfed, unnoticed through what I'm sure we can all agree was a bitter winter. When her ex-husband finally learned about this, he came and collected the dogs...but it was too late. They were both badly emaciated and dehydrated, malnourished (starved almost to death, in fact), and covered in demodectic mange. Their pads were damaged, infected and running pus. They had respiratory infections. Bubba had damaged his ACL attempting to get through the fence.

The owner decided to have the dogs put down as they were barely hanging on to life anyway.

One of the workers at the vet's office convinced him to give the dogs up to her for rescue and adoption.

That was a month ago.

Today, Zoey is 20 pounds heavier than when she was surrendered to rescue. She still needs to put on 10 or so more, but she's a long way from emaciated.

Today, Zoey isn't wet and freezing. Her mange is gone, and her coat is clean and well kept.

Today, Zoey isn't afraid and lonely. She's as sweet, friendly and lovable a dog as you could wish for.

Today Zoey is a different dog. Today she came home. If you want a dog, try rescue first, please.

Such a sad story....but a VERY happy ending!! She's soooo cute and looks VERY happy. AWESOME!

(It's terrible what people do. I recently read an article where an owner left his dog, a Great Dane, outside during the winter and he froze to death. I wish we could do the same to the owner)

Seriously, how people can show such a disregard for dogs is beyond me. Especially with them living under their care (or lack thereof). I mean, how could that woman stand to look at those dogs in her backyard and not have any concern whatsoever!?

So did Bubba make it?

Arent their farts something terrible!? Dont worry, soon you will learn to appreciate them as if they were your own. HAHAHAHA! Our Olde English Bulldogge has some nasty gas. Sometimes he even surprises himself. He will be standing there, fart, and look back at his ass like, "What the hell was that?"
