04 Ninja zx6 idle problem - February 16, 2011, 04:24 PM

Whats up folks,

quick advise needed.

its an 04 Ninja ZX6 will only idle when the choke is wide open
if i attempt to close the choke the engine shuts down???

Is this a spark plug issue, carburetor issue??

any ideas??

How long has it been sitting?

If it has been more than 2 months you need to take the carbs out and apart. Make sure to clean the small jet called the idle jet. That is most likely clogged.

on the lower left hand side is a screw knob, turn it up a little bit then start your bike...
let it warm up and see where the idle is set at...

I forget where the idle is suppose to be set at on the 03 to 04 ZX6, but most are in the range of 1,000 to 1,300.

so set it up higher...warm, then reduce.
see how close you can get to the OEM idle setting.

maybe some one turned your idle screw down.

Carbs all day. They can deliver enough fuel when the air supply is choked down, but can't match the demand when it is leaned out. Clean them yourself or get out your checkbook.

Is it a ZZR 600? If it has a choke then carb but FI will have a fast idle speed. Looks just like choke. Yea check your idle setting.

He's missing the R from the name, so I think it's like the 00-02 ZX-6R model that they kept around for a while as the ZX-6 or 600. It had the same motor, and I think they kept it carbed.

Of course it is carbed with a choke lol duh.

lol I bet its a 2004 ZX6R aka 636.
The reason I say that is because the other model is not a Ninja...only the super sports are named Ninjas...

And this was the only year the FI bikes came with a fast idel switch that looks and works like a choke switch.

vs. this...

zzR

then later this...
