1998 ZX6R Won't Start - January 22, 2009, 03:56 PM

Put fresh 93 in it, new battery (i charged), and bled the carbs of old fuel. Bike acts like it was to turn over and run, but it won't. Suggestions/helpful links/volunteers to help fix it for beer/food?

Yeah, this isn't much to go on.

Probably flooded by now. Let it sit for a while, maybe overnight tonight. Tomorrow's supposed to be nice warm. From now until when you hit the start button next, DO NOT TOUCH THAT THROTTLE. Choke it and try starting it.

If that does not work, then maybe try what works for my '97 zx7r. I find that a really cold start takes some attempts until gas is flowing nicely. I go full choke, hold in clutch, and crank. Bike usually fires up, runs for a few seconds, and dies. Then I twist the throttle about 75% of wide open a couple times, let it return to closed, and crank again. It fires right up. If it dies again, I repeat until it keeps running. The older kawis are a little bit cold-blooded.

Back story is I bought it, it ran for a day. I parked it. Now it doesn't run, and it has a new battery that I charged before I put it in.

Orangeshirt, I'll try that out tomorrow before I go to the Marine Officer place. Thanks

I vote pilot jets in the carbs are plugged.
Let Nudist clean them. Bet it runs then.

Yep, I'll bet the previous owner let gas sit in it for a period. Then you started the bike and got all the gunk and varnish from the rotten gas moving again, and it started lodging in places you don't want solid, coagulated material to lodge.

Oh, and I'm going to ignore that comment about taking it to Nate under my quoted post.

Did you try jumping it with a car (I know not the best thing to do)? I would also try bump starting it, it's a pain but worth a shot.

Could be plugs although could be a few things.

First throw in new plugs and then take the carbs out and remove all the jets and clean them out. Replace your fuel filter and clean your air filter. Also there is no need to run 93. Just use 87.

Ran fine on Sunday. Nate (Nudist) did a good job and was really helpful with advice and especially on transportation. Now it seems to have an issue starting, but it seems like it's just a dead battery because it just clicks. Will post up tonight what goes on.
