Battery Tender Roasted My Battery - March 20, 2012, 08:21 PM

I put a spare battery I have on a Battery Tender Jr. a few weeks ago. Today I noticed the light on the tender was flashing red, indicating the battery wasn't charging. I checked it out and noticed that each cell of the battery was swollen out and the top was showing residue from the acid. I'll have to check it with a load, but I'm guessing its damaged from overcharging. The battery was in good shape prior to being placed on the tender. What might have caused this?

I'd put that battery outside or in a recycle pile asap. It may be bulging from hydrogen gas generated during charging.

I am gonna go with your battery was toast before. Been using BT for almost 15 years and never heard of any problems. We have like 10 in the shop always running. How old was your battery.

A tender is a tender. BT or Yuasa, doesn't matter much. The circuitboard, transformer, and associated stuff inside is all made in Taiwan anydamnway. LOL.

They should be BANNED!

For the children, of course!

I found CB550 diagrams that eliminate the battery. Kinda neat idea, plus makes it easier to keep the look clean on a stripped down CB

The battery was old (8 years), so like dodge suggested I'm guessing that was the cause. I only bothered to ask because the battery had been on a different tender for the past year, then I switched it over to this new one and it burned up. BTW Deep, it was a Yuasa battery.

Yes batteries are dangerous, absolutely they should be banned. I'm sure we can force people to buy a safer battery that costs 20x as much and is exclusively made by my largest campaign donor. Elect me to congress and I'll make it happen.
