Car Mechanics - Need Suggestions/Advice - October 27, 2008, 07:05 AM

My roommate knows a pretty good deal about cars, and can do the majority of his own work. However whenever we need to work on something we have to head to his parents house to get access to his dads tools. He's a good friend of mine so I'm planning on getting him a jack and jack stands for Christmas this year. But I know nothing about floor jacks, how much lift i should look for, etc, etc.

I can't go completely overboard on spending, but I don't want to go cheap either, since hopefully it'll last a long time. Any advice or recommendations on brands, features, where to buy would be greatly appreciated!!

You can get an all aluminum floor jack at Costco for under $100 that will lift 2 tons, I believe. They are nice and light. Jack stands for around $30. I think the floor jack may only be 60-65.

we use this in our home garage and do work on MANY various cars
I wouldn't recommend anything else.

or a bit on the cheaper side

for a quality jack you need something strong/durable that doesn't weight a lot. Craftsman is great in all these catagories and offers a wide variety and range of products.

good luck

Yeah!! I saw this jack and plan to get one myself. It was was nice and low which is good for cars that have lowered suspension.

Probably wont be lifting anything over 2 tons, which in looking around a little yesterday seems like most home use jacks can handle.

here is a low/alum/craftsman/wide pad area floor jack with a lower weight rating that is cheaper

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...0242000P?mv=rr

also an important factor to look at in a jack stand that is frequently overlooked is the pad area.

a lot only have a small pad area (diameter of ~1.5 inches) a larger pad diameter is much better and recommended as well (3" pad)

dub, With the lift you have, have you had any issues with the jack leaking? A lot of reviews say that after a few uses there was leaking and they had to take it back in to get a replacement.

Thanks for repsonses, I really appreciate it!

I've never had an issue no.
I have heard good things about the costco jack as well though.

but any jack from auto zone/advanced auto ect. pro-lift or anything of that nature stay away from...i've seen those literally bend in half.

+1, before I even read this I was writing to tell you to visit Sears, its your best bet on finding a total package deal, jacks, stands, etc, etc. Good Luck
