Question Custom install of HID lights in simple 5.75" headlight - December 29, 2009, 01:45 PM

Dutch turned me on to HID lights. I was thinking about swapping out my regular old h4 bulb and stuffing the ballast and new light into my 5.75" headlight (below right). The headlight bucket is metal and the front is glass. Anybody done this? Don't know if it will all fit in the bucket. Will heat be an issue for the ballast? Any place sell just one tiny ballast, bulb/holder?

Thanks.

Check out ddmtuning. Go for the 35watt kit. Its slim and is plug/play. Should be safer than the 55w as far as heat goes.

I am ordering one today. I want to do the same thing on my Cb500. I might see if I can extend the wires and keep all the electronics under the rear cafe seat area.

I got 6000's. 35w on my Gixxer K6. They're pretty good.
I can put pix up if you want to see it, let me know.

My friend put in dual 55w 4000's on his zx-14. Now those are insanely bright =/

Higher color temp=less light put onto the road.
4300-6k is good range to stick with and what all the yuppie cars come with

Here's my plan. I downloaded the spec sheet for the 35w and 55w ballast.
http://ddmtuning.com/support/index.p...itemid=7&nav=0

The 35w is 3.34" x 2.44" x .5". The 55w is a bit larger. There's a note about not using the 55w and heat in a small areas so I'm going with the 35w.

There's a chance it will melt everything inside my bucket but I will remove the bucket tonight and see if there is enough room for everything. Worth a shot if it fits. I spent lots of time getting my wiring nice and tidy so I refuse to muck it up with this light. It's inside the bucket or nada. At the top of the bucket I added a tiny switch behind the light housing. Since the single HID light will be like 4 times my hi beam, I may ditch the switch if heat is an issue. I think the hole is like 1/8".

For color, I'm going with 5000. The times I've ridden with Dutch I noticed his lights looked a bit like cop lights especially at night while speeding on bumpy (DC) roads. It was annoying but the extra light was nice. My light stinks.

Thanks for the help freaks.

Which Gixxer do u have?

Im on a 06 K6. The hid install was a pain in the ass. There's very little space to put your hands into the headlght housing. Although I didn't take it off, prob would have made it easier.

.
Should be fine, you have a huge glass lens and a metal bucket that will act as a heat sink for ambient heat from the bulb. Consider mounting the ballast with industrial velcro to keep it off the metal.

cop lights? the ones I always see are in the shape of a Crown Vic....
