Fluid behind stator cover is..... - April 13, 2009, 06:58 AM

So I decided to work on the R6 yesterday for a few minutes and wanted to swap out the rashed stator cover for a Woodcraft. I get the cover off and put the bike on the kickstand for a minute to grab the rear stand. Turn around after grabbing the stand and I got a nice puddle of what looks to be oil under the bike coming from the stator. Looks like oil, but it's got an odor of gas to it, too.

Is it oil?

Yeah it's oil. And a little bit of blowby introduces gas in to the oil. All engines have some blowby.

Cool, thanks guys. I would say the amount of fluid lost was maybe a 1/4 - 1/2 quart. The oil was just changed less than 250 miles ago so I'm just going to add some back to get to an acceptable level.

Is there supposed to be oil behind that cover? I'm guessing not, but I could be wrong. However, those parts are not supposed to be bathed in oil, you had a lot of oil come out. Something doesn't seem right.

The parts weren't "bathed" in oil, per say. And when I had the bike on the center stand and took off the cover, I had a drop or two come out. When I went to move the bike and put it on the kickstand is when it really started flowing.

I have no idea whether or not there's suppose to be a) any fluid in that area, and b) if any fluid is suppose to "drain" from that area when the bike is on the kickstand.

RnR, Kev....anyone else?

Yes, oil is supposed to be there. Not uncommon losing a little when you remove the stator cover.

Yes, oil there is normal. If the bike is on a stand, it should all be settled in the bottom of the case, so you shouldn't lose a lot.

Also, when reassembling, you will want to replace the gasket if it has broken in any places.
