I did some maintenance --- pics - April 8, 2008, 01:00 PM

I did some maintenance on my 2005 Kawasaki ZX-6R the other day. I was just going to change the oil and change the antifreeze since itís been in there for 2 years and 23,000 miles. Yeah, I actually ride my bike.

Then I found dried up antifreeze in various places and was surprised how narrow the hose clamps were. So I replaced them with high quality stainless steel ones. I have noticed the smell of antifreeze when riding lately. Pretty simple job but if you donít like to take your bike apart I wouldnít try this. My hoses were good, no cracks or overly dry areas so I reused them. After I replaced the clamps I refilled the radiator. I burped the system this morning and all looks good. I also added a new chain and sprockets. I have no idea what this would cost at a shop. Too much Iím sure.
Might want to check your hose fittings out.

Good post!

What is it with Kawis and cooling systems?! Oh, and for being mechanically inclined and therefore saving lots of loot!

Nice, I have the same work to do on my 7r very soon. I think the lightweight alloys used for the fittings expand and contract in accordance with termperature changes to the extent that seals break down and start seeping.

While you got something apart, it's a good time to shoot some Gunk Engine degreaser around down there, brush it in, and then hose it all off. Periodic cleaning will help later on when you're really spiffing up for a sale/trade.

Nice job of preventive maintenance there!

Is that chain tight and not adjusted yet, or is it an optical illusion?

Yes your chain is way too tight man!!!! Lossen that thing up before you put your chain into your motor! The cotter pin is in the axle is how to tell the axle is tightened up. At least 3/4 inch slop.

Great write up.

+1 on getting good hose clamps. OEM clamps are cheapo el-junko.

+1 ... your chain is way to tight.

... and well, now we need to make a video of this! LOL.
