There's no emissions test for motorcycles in VA.

This, your only getting a safety inspection. All lights must work no LED's endless OEM. Horn has to function tires good life and brake pads. If you have a integrated rear tail light turn signals don't turn them on. When they stand behind you and say left signal. Say I don't have any they are not required in VA.

Integrated tail light is not "legal". Don't know if you have front signals or not, but the law in VA is all four or none at all. The signals in integrated tails are too close together.

Tell them you use hand signals only.

If you have turn signals they have to be legal and they have to function. To be legal they have to be DOT approved and at least 7" apart. Most undertail lights don't meet that requirement.

It's an all or nothing deal. You can pass with none on the bike (that the inspector can see) or you can pass if you have them and they meet DOT requirements.

The reason for this oddity is that some older bikes actually came from the factory without turn signals therefore they put in an exception for them in the law. Since most inspectors would be hard pressed to prove whether a bike was orginally equipped with turn signals most are willing to interprete that rule as "If you don't have any you don't need any".

I'm actually shocked that VA has let that rule stand as long as they have rather than put in someting like "Any bike made after 1980 must have working turn signals".

To be safe you should just strip off the turn signals and go get inspected. If you get failed for them being on the bike and not meeting DOT standards you'll have to go somewhere else to get reinspected or get legal ones installed cause the inspector probably ain't gonna let you slide with showing back up with them missing once he's seen them on the bike.

There's bold riders and old riders, but damn few bold old riders.

Pull the fuse/relay for the turn signals and remove the front (unless they're mounted in the mirrors) signals.

If they're mounted in the mirrors, simply put some electrical tape over the lenses.

This is what I did. Electrical tape over the flush mounts in the front and disabled the ones in the integrated tail.

Passed inspection.

Got home and reconnected the tail indicators and took the electrical tape off.
