Main journal bearing insert bad - January 6, 2012, 11:40 PM

I finally was able to get around to splitting the case on my spare motor. Everything looked good but this....

The main journal bearing inserts

Now for this picture this is what the other Inserts look like... compare and contrast

and here is a video

Case.mp4 video by Coy_Wilcox - Photobucket

could I grind the crankshaft at a machine shop or is it toasted?

Yikes! If it was mine I would remove the crank and polish the damaged crank pin and then measure it in about 6 different locations around the pin to see if it's in spec. Then I would plastigauge the new bearings and crank to find the appropriate bearing. I would also remove the connecting rod caps and inspect those bearings as well.

O trust me that's what I'm doing tomorrow. I had to call it early because my girl wanted me to come inside.

I saw the journal bearing insert and said fuck and took a swig of my captain & coke while sighing... but the motor had 8k on it.. at least that's what the person said who I bought it off of and it was 300 bucks and told my ex its a good learning / project motor
