Motor locked up? - January 6, 2009, 10:34 AM

Alright guys help me out with a little mystery.

What happened to my motor.

Bike '97 TL1000S
~35,000 miles, bought it at 27k stripped the bike down replaced the cracked frame and built a pretty gnarly streetfighter.
Up until 3 months ago the bike was super solid. Ran quiet, strong and dependably.
Out riding one Sunday and suddenly notice a new noise. It sounded like a loose valve tick at low throttle and 1,500-3k rpm.

It is my daily driver, I felt bad, but I ignored the noise and kept riding. About a month ago I checked the valves. Front exhaust were ~.05mm out of spec, the front intake the rear exhaust were a also just a bit out of spec. Swap out 6 shims total.

Ride the bike to work the next day. Still making the noise.
I'm thinking fuck con rod bearings!!!
On the ride home I'm about 1/2 way into my 2 mile commute, engine probably isn't up to running temp, I'm at a light and the bike cuts off, try to restart nothing.
The starter engages but wont turn the motor over.

Trailer the bike back to the garage put a socket on the stator bolt and nothing! Locked up solid!

Pull the starter, its good.

I pull both side covers, inspect the stator, looks good. Pull the right side cover. Clutch looks good, transmission spins freely, oil pump too.
I did notice some gold bearing material in the oil pickup screen. Nothing massive but there were a few flecks.

Check both valve covers. Everything looks good.

Then I get frustrated put a 2 1/2 ft breaker bar and a 36mm socket on the stator rotor and say fuckit and put some weight into it.

It took some torque but motor turned over!! And now it turns over smoothly, (spark plugs out) Now I'm just confused.... Why did my motor lock up.

Short of putting everything backtogether and testing the oil pressure is there any way of checking the bearings w/o splitting the cases?

Did I just seize a piston? How?

I've been planning on either building a motor or swapping in a fresher TLR motor but right now is not the time, I'm broke and I need the bike to get me through the winter.

Any help or suggestions I'm open to anything, I have a feeling I am overlooking something stupid, or maybe i'm just fukd and need a new motor, but I'd like to know why.

Any chance I would get some new gaskets, put it back together with a prayer and baby it for a few more months?

Heres a few pics of final assembly, not a bad looking bike if I do say so myself. I really wouldn't change much about it, I had a vision when I started and built it from nothing.
The VW in pieces in the background is the reason I still don't have a 4 wheeled vehicle.

What did your oil look like? Any smoke coming out exhaust? Maybe a piston ring broke? Check your valves again and make sure you did not drop one!!! Look at the top of the piston's thru the spark plug hole. Take the bike to a qualified bike repair shop.

Just kidding with the last one! Tear that motor apart before you hurt it real bad!

with all the shit I took of I didn't drain the oil well not all of it...

I will do that.

I was working without my lift or stands, sitting on the floor, using someone else's tools, and worst of all no music. I hate that shit, I'm spoiled!

I'm going to bring it back to my garage and do a proper leak down test and check the oil.
I defiantly need to check those valves again now the motor turns.

Funny thing is my garage is more "qualified" than some in the area... IE I have more pieces of paper with name and OEM certs on them, all of which don't realllllly mean shit in the long run.

sounds expensive...wonder what the cost ratio is to having my bike fixed compared to the parts u want/need?

actually I went against the FACTORY service manual's recommendation of oil every 3,500 miles and filter change every 11,000. I changed the oil AND filter just 1,000 miles ago, a 1,000 miles early, but only cause I was working at a dealership and didn't pay for it. Or my brake fluid, or coolant.
In fact I was probably being paid to do it.

Why do people think I'm crazy when I don't change the filter? Why would Suzuki say that....
