Need Help Troublehsooting Start Problem - July 17, 2014, 12:05 PM

So I make it 25 miles into the office fine this morning. I park and come back during lunch to find the bike dead.

When I turn the ignition on, my gauges flash fine....hit the starter and everything goes dark.

Tried bump-starting her but couldn't get it to turn over for more than half a second. And it was pretty weak at that.

Thoughts?

1. Check the battery connections.

2. Did you perhaps lock the steering and maybe turned it to engage the brake light this morning. (And then walked away.) That could run down your battery.

This. My guess is a loose connection.

Would a dead battery also cause the bike to shut off after a few blocks after I successfully bump started her?

I tried to keep the rpm's over 3K even while idling to try and get the alternator kicked in, but I didn't make it more than a hundred yards.

Second gear, 3K rpms, going 20 mph, shuts down.

Could be your stator or regulator also. To check the regulator hook up a voltmeter to the battery on DC volts and around 4000 rpm you should have about 14 volts. To check the stator you need a volt meter that reads ac volts. Should be around 85 for each wire.

^ I agree.

I would also check the connections where the harness plugs into the RR and where the stator connect to the harness. Make sure they aren't burned up. Unless you are still running with the original battery from the factory and it's finally kicked the bucket. To see if something besides the battery in your charging system has failed, take a volt meter and see how much voltage is going into the battery at 5K RPM.

Loaded her up on a truck and took her home last night. I hooked her up to my battery tender and will see after a day or two if the battery takes the charge.

Unfortunately, I don't have a voltmeter.

Well, I left her on a tender for 2 days and the battery should have enough of a charge. Now a new symptom....

I turn the key to the ON position and nothing happens on the gauges. Then I flip the kill switch on and i hear this clicking from my fuse box. It's coming from the Fuel Pump Relay fuse. I know nothing about my FI system. Guess it's time to bring her into a shop.

Sound like symptoms of dead battery. Have you tried jumping with car to confirm?

Yep. Used my portable battery jumper. Starts up, but won't idle for more than a minute. Guess my tender wasn't able to charge the battery after all even though the indicator says it did.

Doesn't hurt to get a new battery at this point, no?
That way, you can have a battery in the bike and one on a tender in the garage or something...
