New rider needs serious help - March 24, 2010, 06:56 PM

Ok I'm in need of some serious help. I rode to work today and the way there was perfect and smooth. However, on the way back, I hit heavy traffic and bike was having issues. Around 30 minutes into the traffic, engine was constantly above around 210F and bike would not wanna go in friction zone. I gave it a little gas and it would just jerk forward 4-5 times and turn off. So I gave it a little more gas and jerking was stronger and next thing I know, I'm doing a 45 degree wheelie for a good 2 seconds. Luckily I landed the front end and took off fine.

I would have the same engine shutting off/jerking problem the rest of the way home at every stop. Am I just not riding/working the clutch properly?Any tips/guidance would be greatly appreciated...

I got a 03 r6 with 11k+ miles if that helps...

Geez. Not sure. Sounds like you were having clutch trouble or you were over heating. IDK. Bring it to RnR and have them look at it.

^I like this.

what do you mean friction zone? wouldn't shift?

Above 210 in stop and go traffic isn't unusual. You mentioned it shut off - did it start back up with no problem? Only asking to rule out a charging system issue. And the dumb question: you had enough gas right?

It starts back up no problem. Funny thing is... I had refueled last weekend and didn't ride around much. However, today, the little oil light came on and the mileage gauge changed to show (I'm guessing reserve oil)? So i stopped at a local station and refueled for 2 gallons... At least made the light go away...

Don't feel bad newbee, we were all there.
Do you have an owner's manual? We need to get you up to speed on the ins and outs of your bike and it's gauges, fluids, parts and stuff.

what did the mileage gauge show when the light came on? I'm sure it was your tach, but what did it say?

I think he means the fuel light came on. It then switched to reserve and cleared the trip to the "reserve trip" my r1 did similar. Fuel light though... not oil light...right?

Hm not sure on the difference... Just got the bike 2 weeks ago and this is the first light I saw come on besides neutral . However, again, I wasn't out of gas since it refueled for only 2 gallons...

LOL - I'm not feeling bad. Just wanna know more about the bike and if I'm doing something wrong so I could learn from it... Don't wanna do a wheelie again accidentally.... Shit was SO scary haha

if you were in fact overheating, yes, the bike will act funny if you try to keep going. Yes, your "oil" light will come. In this case, it acts as your fuel injection warning light, meaning something is wrong. Usually during an overheat, the temp read out will flash while the red light is on or you may see the read out: CHEC or FI. I'm not too familiar with the r6
